Q: Does anyone have suggestions for a small talk lesson?

Hello I'm teaching a class with 19 to 21 year old intermediate level students and my next lesson will be on small talk. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do for this lesson? I wanted to create different scenarios and make the students improvise to create a small talk conversation. I had an idea to use a short clip from Seinfeld or a walk to remember as an example. Does anyone have any other ideas about how to make this more fun and interesting?

Thanks in advance.

Get 4 of them up the front and pretend you are a taxi driver in your own country.
Get them to ask you where is questions like sites or good restaurants.
You can ask them about China .
Also through in stuff that is a little beyond their English level so they ask questions.
You can put the class into small groups and give each group a senario that they would come across in everyday life and build a couple of minutes around that.
Good luck

Go to https://en.islcollective.com and punch out a few work sheets. You can use them to create some dialogue after they complete the sheet. Easy.

Lessons on small talk are amongst the easiest classes to run.

What do you talk about when you meet someone new?

all you need is a social setting (any social setting), and a general topic they must talk about (RobRocks suggestion of music, or the weather)

Just say something negative about China,,, haha,,,that'll get them fired up.   But you might want to be close with them first, I'm with small group of rich kids and they see me as 'Uncle', so I can do stuff maybe a lot of teachers can't, shouldn't.

I stick with the mild cases though, not the 3 T's.   I love asking the cute girls if they gonna take a bf who smokes, yells, hack/spits, tries to treat them as Second-class person. I love seeing them beginning to wake the fk up.

get the students to sit in a circle, put topics on some paper and pass the box around the circle to music, when  the music stops the student pulls out a topic from the box and you talk about it.
