I'm not far from Shanghai. I'll do it for 2,000 yuan. As long as it's not anything weird. My guess is that it's weird.

not weird

Or it's a few thousands of DVDs, which requires some serious man-power and equipment, if it have to be done quickly and with guaranties of reliability. But since the original post does not give any relevant precision, who knows. TIC...

1. I'm trying to figure out why or what you would be doing with 1000s of DVDs in China.

2. Legal ramifications.

3. If you were Chinese I could tell you how to easily do this. If you are from a different country, then youb will have to try another route.

Have  you figured out your answer yet?

You need to be careful.  If you are caught arriving in a western country with thousands of pirated movies on an HD you will be done for copyright.

I am fairly sure in most western countries you are allowed to rip DVDs for your own use, but you need to have the actual DVD to prove you have paid the relevant fee to the copyright holders.

hquanshang:

Thanks.

It seems the legal ramifications may be too high to take a chance. I will be sending a container back with my accumulated personal belongings and was thinking that customs would not look into this type of move so closely but maybe I am wrong...

It's very unlikely you will be stopped with a few hard disks. It's your choice.  Only you know the answer.

I seem to recall there being notices at the HK border saying it was illegal to have ripped off movies on your laptop. But will they stop you and check your laptop? Never heard of it.

Dude buy external DVD Player and copy it using computer by urself.

DrMonkey:

A thousands DVDs ? You would need 10 days doing only this, assuming the DVD reader does not die in the middle of the process.
