If you are a foreigner in China, you can not get a credit card.  It doesn't matter if you are a student or the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation.

You can, however, get a debit card.  But they are a pain in the butt to maintain, so you will probably need to stick to cash while in China.

Foreigners in China can get credit cards. I am a CEO of a small enterprise and I have a BOC Credit Card. It is certainly not easy to find banks that will issue one to a foreigner but it is not impossible. As for student status, for many reasons the chances are extremely slim. You would probably have to deposit a large sum in the bank and not withdraw during the usage period of the credit card to stand any chance.

Xpat.John:

You were able to get a credit card?  I couldn't get my business bank that I had several million US in to give me a credit card, they told me it was against Chinese law.  Pre-paid cards were okay, but non-secured credit cards were not.

But, since this is China, anything is possible.  You obviously had more luck than I did.

I got debit card at Merchants Bank with Visa logo two weeks ago for 1000 Rmb deposit. Minimum balance required is 50 000 Rmb. If balance is lower than that, Bank is charging 50 Rmb per month penalty fee.

Card comes with Bank's USB for online purchases. Bank USB works only on Windows OS, so if you are MacIntosh fan, you won't be able to make online purchases. I must get Windows OS to my MacBook.

Debit card is available with MasterCard logo, too.

icnif77:

These are conditions for Gold card with Visa or MC logo at Chinese Bank. 50 Rmb monthly fee is not too expensive for somebody who doesn't or cannot have minimum balance.

You can have debit Visa account with Chinese Bank for 1000 Rmb deposit, and 50 Rmb monthly fee. I think, these conditions are much better than any Western Bank I know. Beside, my permanent residence is currently in China, so all my attempts to establish Western Bank account are fruitless.
