Q: Does anyone pay for international (expat) health insurance? If so, who do you use?

I am an older expat and feel that I should have some extra coverage than just the Chinese medical coverage from my school. So, I am seeking recommendations from other expats.

I've heard that AXA health insurance is a good one to use.

My wife is hell bent on me having insurance. So we use PingAn foreign health insurance in Shenzhen, but it cost Y24,000 for 1 year. All things are including.

expatlife26:

That's not too bad.

Does that cover you at nice expat clinics? like can you just swipe your card and see a foreign doctor?

Its like our cards back home, 85% of hospitals accept Pingan, the closes I got to a foreign doctor was from Hong Kong at the Shenzhen, Hong Kong hospital. It's good for in and out and even surgery and treatment for more serious caes..

WOW, that is $4000 USD a year. That seems pretty expensive. I was looking for something around $1000 a year.

Nashboro, real health care here is way more expensive than back home. Insurance is going to reflect that.

The health care the chinese masses get is total BS, just placate them for 10 RMB they get a dirty saline + vitamin C drip. It's cheap but it's worthless.

I am a broker.  It depends on your age really but $1000 per year is often possible for young and relatively young people.  Send me an email to adam.fayed@imperium-capital.biz and I am happy to give you more information.

I am as I am also not exactly young anymore. Luckily it was so far the pure waste of money I prefer to play safe what concern of the health.
Nevertheless it does not come cheap. If you are over 40 so 4,000 USD for the full package sounds like a great deal in case of international underwriters.
You can get it slightly cheaper from Hong Kong based companies but you may be confronted with a bit annoying paperwork and administrative requirements when really using it.
From Chinese companies you get the best deals but you better check if international private hospitals in your place accept that without limits. Nevrtheless basically all Chinese hospitals will accept them and thete some pretty good hospitals among them too.
