Q: Does anyone play netball in China?

For those that don't know, netball is a kind of crappy version of Basketball that is played by school girls in the UK, and other countries though which ones I'm not actually sure. And with that in mind, does anyone know if it is played in China?

Lessee. I googled the 7-letter word (Wasn't difficult, really.) and discovered a brand new world of sport out there called.. netball!

(Actually, I watched a bit of it on TV when I lived in Australia some years ago so I'm teasing ya.)

There is an international sport federation - the INF - with its own website. After drawing up the home page, a few clicks later, I found the members page. (70+ members worldwide).

Alas, China is not a member of the INF. But Taiwan (referred to as Chinese T***** on said site) and Hong Kong are members. In fact, Hong Kong is ranked 29th in the world, sandwiched between Ireland and India. Not a major accolade given the world rankings stop at Number 35 (that'd be Israel).

As far as the sport actually contested in mainland China on a school or grass-roots level, it's anybody's guess.

Yes there is netball in china. What sort of level are you interested in? We have girls teams in the international schools and there are local leagues in some major cities.

Bubba:

Hi I am very interested in learning more about your netball in China.  Age group and ability wise.  We are taking an under 15 team to Singapore from Perth at the end of November for an invite only international tournament held at the Singapore Sports School.  Teams from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand participate.  I would love to bring a team to China, travel to major cities and verse various teams.

You are quite wrong.  Netball is played professionally in some countries and has a huge number of participants in many countries.

It is a major sport in the Commonwealth Games (which, incidentally, will be held this year in...in...Edinburgh, I think).

Socially it is played by men and women, sometimes in mixed competitions, on most nights of the week.

In my county, Australia, there are more netball courts than golf courses and tennis courts combined.  In fact, I think netball is the number one participant sport in the country.

It definitely is not some kind of poor man's basketball. It's fast, and very skillful.
As for whether or not it's played in China, I couldn't say. But I'd doubt it....after all, they don't play any sport here, do they.
