Q: Does bride-buying actually exist?

I know TedDByer jokes about this, and I've seen the fake pictures of 'Russian brides on sale', but does bride-buying actually exist in China?

Of course it exists! Human trafficking isn't new

It's illegal (duh), but quite common, and with the ratio of men to women in China, I'm guessing that number is gonna keep going up.

A lot of the forced brides-to-be come from poorer Southeastern Asian countries, like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, etc...Apparently buying a wife can cost you 30 to 40,000 RMB, according to this article. No idea what the stats are about how much human trafficking there is overall in China, but you hear stories about kids being abducted and sold off all the time.

Yeah, what alva said is true. And in northern Inner Mongolia part, to buy a Mongolian/North-Korean bride is even easier and cheaper.

Of course it exists. It may be obvious or not, but it exists. Look at those parks where parents meet to find a groom or bride. It may not be human traffic per se since there is no violent coercion, but it still register as bride-buying.

I've read about Chinese women abducted and sold into slavery in Africa. I think it exists every where, even in North America.

I wish I could just buy a wife like buying  piece of clothing. If it was that easy I'd have 100 wives by now.

There was once a wife selling scam I read about here in China.

Basically, a woman would show up in a village with 3 other women who she would sell as brides.  After all the brides were sold and all the money paid, the brides would run off and meet up with their seller again so that they could be sold in another village a few hundred miles away.

By the time they were caught, the women had been sold off about 10 times each at about 20,000RMB each time.

It could depend on the type of bride you are looking for. I know a small fish in a big pond that likes to get those $25 dollar inflatable brides. He picks them up at the market all by himself it came slightly used but only the first 3 inches.......

The girl I bought on EBay didn't even look like her pictures. She couldn't speak English, never went to university. She said she paid 8000RMB for someone to write to me.She promised she could learn English and still wanted to marry me. I said OK I'll meet you in Nanning on Sept 16. I left China on the 14th. Paypal refunded all my money.
 I'd buy you Ammia.

Do you mean as in paying a "bride price" or as in actual purchasing "I want that one"?

It once was and about 10 years ago you were able to purchase information about women wanting to marry abroad in North America, you never had to meet the person and all you had to do was sponser them into the country. Now however you must meet in person and be able to provide specific documents and pictures that show you together, a visa with the stamp of the country in the time you met along with financial documents

Okay, for those who may know, which one will give me a bigger bang for my buck?

Vietnamese? Korean? Mongolian?

Also, if I am not satisfied, can I get a refund or at least an exchange or credit?

Okay I have some info for you dorks...

The more common practice in this area is the Dowry, not the bride price.

A dowry is a payment the wife's family makes to the husband's family. It might sound like they are paying for a husband, but this isn't right! Since the bride lives with the husband, the wife's family pays money to the husband's family to ensure good conditions for their daughter, as compensation for the fact that the husband's family is providing for her and the children.

So, if you paid for your wife, and you don't live with her family, you got ripped off!

Nope.

I just remember from anthropology class that "dowry" specifically meant money or gifts by the wife's family.

But I guess this custom was more common in the China of 100 years ago than today.

No, it's pretty common today. In fact, to get married without paying the wife's family is looked down upon in Chinese society today. It's part of what people here call "naked marriage."

Chinese men are known for acquiring Vietnamese brides.

GuilinRaf:

Closer for one, and the Vietnamese ladies are looking for Chinese husbands (apparently they are better than Vietnamese ones).

Also, many Chinese boys believe that Vietnamese brides are "more traditional" and more family oriented.  My friends brother, who married a Vietnamese girl even told me that they are "cheaper" (lower bride price, do not demand house or car, etc.).

Word of warning however:

I used to tutor some Vietnmese students when I was in Guilin during lunch time. They were mostly girls but quite a few boys showed up as well and participated actively (Nap time is too important for most Chinese students).

Anyway, I said half jokingly that maybe I should joining a Vietnamese dating site (my GF had just broken up with me) and we all laughed.  However, I got a few emails from some of the girls telling me that Vietnamese girls who want foreign husbands are usually bad.

Dont know if this is true or not, but I just offer this anecdote since you ask.

Yes it does. Last year I had a trip in Yunnan and found out some advertisements that lead me to ask about that. I kept asking and found out really bad cases.

Also I have a Jiangxi friend who told me another experience. Maybe it also happens in the whole country but in the most developed provinces perhaps is still more kept as secret.
