Q: Does China lack the ability to generate lasting interest towards itself?

Alright, this forum has been dead for the past week.  That's weird when you consider its China centric theme. (Perhaps not too weird when you consider lack of continued development of the site, or the oddball trolls... But looking at those trolls, they seemed to actually rile people up.)  Despite any of the shortcomings of this particular forum, I think one of the greater issues at play here is something about China. People genuinely have run out of things to say here.  And its not just here. Recently I began looking at reddit China topics a lot more to fill in the void.  And it has jts own issues - about 90% of the topics now are overtly political.  Reposts from mainstream media.  They aren't discussion threads in other words. It seems the only real interest China is generating isn't from its society, arts, even food ( food needs innovation too! Chinese cuisine seems static in many ways...). It seems discussion generated about China is only related to one sphere of life ( political) and nothing else. That is empty in my opinion.  Thoughts?

I guess it's because most people here on ECC have been here long enough that the usual discussions about pollution, visa issues, job hassles etc got old a long time ago.

There just isn't that much to talk about after you finish venting about life here.

I've been following reddit a lot more too .. I like current event discussions, there is always something going on and ECC doesn't cater to that.I wish they did..

Yeah what you say goes somewhat in line with my thinking. Basically beyond venting or getting help/advice with jobs or visa issues, there isn't much left to talk about.  Besides politics, but I get the feeling that most posters in this forum are a lot more wary of this type of topic... Whereas redditers seem a bit more daring and edgy about it.  Anyway, I am beginning to think that China is a lot more static and unchanging than it is given credit for.  There doesn't seem to be much ability to change in terms of cuisine, entertainment, or society in general.  The biggest source of change is basically infrastructural, but that is usually just a bunch more plain cookie cutter buildings and whatnot.  I like China, but I'm sorta trying to come to grips with the question of how it ( or discussions of it) can be so boring!

According to my observation,200-300 members will comment daily, only 5% of them will post a new thread. That's nothing to do with lack the ability to generate topics, everyone here is over 18 and able to think on their own,The biggest challenge is to post something relevant to private but within boundary, public affair has been solved(I mean for the elder members),as for newbie(such as me),the passion will burn no more than a week(maximum a month) cause I watch it every day(1200 pages?I only read what I want)....

For the further development of this website(I am an IxD student),many things need to change(too many to reply on this comment) such as new point system/better editon version/bonus system, towards something like usual social community website(Facebook,twitter).....haha,the only thing I can do is just suggestion.

China is (in most ways) a VERY conservative country. And conservative places don't like change... thus, nothing new to talk about.

There is some movement in the arts - some painters, photographers, writers and musicians, but probably because they're not making big waves, they're not discussed on here (and, for the writers and musoes, possibly because it's in Chinese... either that, or they get arrested and harmonised before we hear about them Tongue)

Most of the films and TV are the same boring crap from a few decades ago - just with richer people in them. Either that, or their rip-offs from overseas (looking at you, Voice of China!)

Food?? Just thinking about this, and last night's outing...my companion ordered standard Chinese fare, and a coconut drink... why no-one here has yet gotten the idea to add the coconut to the meal has me lost! (ie, why Thai food isn't more popular...). "Spicy' is now everywhere... and yet, Indian food hasn't taken off ???

So, yeah.... the only constant change is the politics
