Q: Does it ever feel like "home" here?

This place is starting to feel like home in a really weird and unexpected way. I'll be leaving in a few days, and I feel like I'm going to miss it a lot. I'm very familiar with this city, have a pretty good relationship/friendship/whatever with most people in my little (well, okay, big) community, and -- oddly enough -- that includes my landlord now.

Have I just gotten used to the place? I guess it's been home for the last year, and it's definitely growing on me, but... I dunno. Any long-timers care to chime in?

All I know is i'm more content now here than i've been in years or felt for many years in England. Of course, having a child may have a little something to do with that, but then I remember the last time I went back to England was about three years ago, at which time I was unmarried and had no plans to have children, and after 6 weeks I was very much ready to come back. 'Wherever I lay my hat' is my motto.

Hulk:

To be honest, it sounds like you came from a really shit place in England, like my friend Doncaster Dave. I'm not entirely sure the whole country is like that, but I could be wrong.

Hulk,

Britain is a wonderful place, and I'm sure mArtiAn knows it. The trouble with Britain is massive swathes of it are populated with welfare dependent asshats with a vote!

No, I come from Muswell Hill in North London, and it's a cool place. But it's not about the place. Truth be told I can never really understand most of the complaints on here; if I felt about the place and the people the way that so many seem to, i'd have left long ago. My experience here has simply been a whole lot of good. That's got nothing to do with the government or any of that wonderful stuff. To me they're all the same. I don't trust them as far as I can piss. But the people? To me they have always been good and made me feel very welcome. Of course, I don't like being ripped off, but that's easy to avoid for the most part. Not too keen on cockroaches either, I just killed one the size of my dick. Seen some big ones here too. Rats I could do without, but for general life, i'm content. Happy even. As my heroin addicted brother said to me years back when I asked him during a particularly painful withdrawal (that he still managed to maintain his good humour through), what his secret to happiness was: just lower your standards:) And Hugh, my brother is one of those wellfare dependent asshats, and I love him (excuse the sentimentalism, i'm brandied up). Kind of stuck with him, but I love him all the same. Don't think he's ever voted though.

HGR,

We have those scumbags in my town too. I can't fucking stand them. As soon as I get into Medical School (if I make it), I'm bailing for greener pastures. Then I'm just going to work myself to death so my kids can have a better life or something like that.

mArtiAn, ever thought of getting your brother over to China to teach English? If he can get off the drugs and pick himself up, it would be much easier to stay off the drugs in China. Nobody to sell them to him...

That's one of the attractions of the place actually, I had a drug problem when I came here. But he'll not come, i've tried.

I loved my first trip to China and the second time I came it was just a relief, I really felt like I had come home. Going to China had made me aware that my life was just too boring. I can identify with having too many redneck welfare rats here. I need more crazy in my life, but I can't live in China and give up what I do have at home.

I just went to the Dominican to see if I can get some of the China smacked out of me, it's more run down, the women lie and steal, everybody cheats, I had to bribe police, the women have big uns. It's alot like China except for the big uns. Needless to say I had a good time, lots of stories, I've even got a third degree burn. But I do miss China so I plan to take the easy way out and adopt some thing from a local slave ring.

mArtiAn:

Third degree burn? You shoulda worn a rubber. Or maybe you did. I guess that's where they get the phrase 'burning rubber'.

Yes it does. When I am at home with the wife, there is basically no difference if we are in China or anywhere in the world.

I came here, thinking I was taking my wife  "home" to  Canada in the near future ,,,,,I got here and thought ,    go home "for what' ....... I now live here and consider this "home" ...well simple ..... it is  HOME ......    far better family type stuff and just plain "nicer" people than back at home  .......I love my family and brothers back home, but for christ;s sake, it ain't all about money.

I went from $100000/ yr to 36000/yr to live here ...... way less taxes ...hahahahahhaha

Since I've always hated my hometown, and the fact that I have no relatives there nor a reason to go back there, I've considered Beijing "home" the moment I set foot there.

That, plus there emotional attachment to that city (I've been through so many things there, and became a MAN), and the fact that my parents are still there.

So yeah, despite all the negative points I keep complaining about, Beijing is still the only place on earth where I truly feel at home.

I have been here 7 months and like some of the other commenters, I have grown quite attached to the place! Great times, good food, little work and lots of money! Why go home? So I can work 40 or 50 hours a week to just get by? Not go out and stay at home every night! No way

Hulk:

Welcome to China, and to eChinaCities!

I had a horrible time in another province. Here in Northern China, I'm actually enjoying it immensely. The people are just much better in my city, and I've had no reason to complain.

My advice is, if you don't like it in one province, go elsewhere.

Yes indeed for the first time it does feel like home.

For the past 3 years I have been living in China 6 months for work and back home for 6 months.

In the 4 months now that I have been back I am so comfortable here now with my gf..friends..colleagues and my apartment that I have decided to move here permanently year round.

It's just a better quality of life all around than back home...way more interesting and of course my girl is here which contributed heavily in my decision.

I will now spend the next 5 or 6 years here at least.

Home is where the heart is and aside from the usual China complaints my heart is here now.surprise

Hulk:

I'm enjoying northern China, and the only reason we're going home soon is because she's pregnant. No other reason. I actually strongly considered making a life here since it's been so good.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
