My freelancing studies are proceeding, but I do dread the amount of work and time I'd need to put into it before my reputation would validate a decent hourly fee. If you get a chance, stay at the St. Regis in shenzhen, super expensive, only stayed for a special occasion. But its 101 floors, with a bar on the top floor.  88 kuai for a drink, but worth it for the views!  Just drink reaaaaly slow....

Never spent a ton of time in Shenzhen but I think I know the building you're talking about. I like the trend of using the tops of supertall skyscrapers as hotels. They're definitely expensive both for dining and staying...but when your old man picks up the tab it's a little easier!

My first time visiting HK when I was 22 I stayed at a guesthouse at Chungking mansion...which is a total shithole and objectively a loud obnoxious place that it takes forever to get in and out of. I mean it was an experience and I didn't have any huge reason to regret it...but it was part of the sequence of events that made me reevaluate my life.

What I think a lot of people giving you shit right now are missing...is that there's a big difference between occasionally enjoying something nice and being a rich elitist prick. I don't need to stay at a Four Seasons, but i'm really really happy that I can stay at a little bit better place than Chungking when I go to HK.

I mean being poor is NOT cool...and that's not putting anybody down who doesn't have a choice but it's a reality. I don't avoid that place because i think i'm just too great a person for it...it objectively sucks, and paying 6-700HKD for a legit little 3-star hotel is worth it to not be treated like a scumbag. Doing without is not something to proud of. Billions have no choice. What's impressive is carving out a comfortable life that you enjoy (responsibly).
