Q: Does "obedient" mean the same thing in Chinese as it does in English?
Being obedient is considered a good quality in China. Does it really mean the same thing, or are there some small differences? Although I respect my parents, ask them for advice, and often take that advice, I wouldn't say I'm obedient. Would that be considered obedience in China? Or is it truly on a whole different level?
Filial Piety is more of blind obedience and is expected of children. Heeding your parent's advice or not after you've given it due consideration is critical thinking and not filial. That's why you'll see young people marrying the person chosen by their parents but having another "real love."
Obedient = the willingness to submit to an authority.
If you take advice from someone you are not being obedient, if you do what they say without question you are being obedient.
If being obedient is considered a good quality in China, why doesn't China learn to be obedient?
Obedience in China is a concept that exists when there is no feasible way to avoid doing something the correct or required way.
