Q: Does Taiwan offer the same employment opportunities as China?

Judging from what I've heard, Taiwan is China 2.0, in healthier, cleaner, and more financially rewarding. Has anyone worked there? Is it easy to find jobs? What are some good job searching websites? What are the drawbacks?

How the heck did she answer her own question? She pointed out the good points of Taiwan as compared to the mainland and asked about work. The status of Taiwan, also, is not the issue here. The question could equally be asked of Hong Kong or even Singapore by a person interested in Chinese languages, food and culture.

I had a good, long look at Taiwan before applying to schools on the mainland. It seems much, much harder to get a decent job there out of season, competition is much more intense for good positions, because of the island's obvious attractions.

The pay is higher, but most often you will have to pay for your own accomodation, so depending on the contact you may not end up all that far in front compared to the mainland.

Tefl.com and Dave's often carry Taiwan job ads. One point: it is illegal to work in kindergartens in Taiwan and this rule is enforced (at least it was six month ago, when I was looking) but many schools will ask you to do so, anyway. That's dodgy as sin.

Maybe she doesnt want to be a teacher, this post is in "business and jobs" section, maybe she wants a proper job... I havent been to Taiwan, from what I gather it is about 20 years along the industrialisation/globalisation/commercialisation (whatever you want to call it) ladder. All I know is there are quite a few folks from Taiwan here in Guangdong becasue they cannot get jobs, or well enough paid jobs back in their home.

What the hell is a "proper" job compared to teaching?

Dagobah:

well, everyone immediately assumes that she is looking for a teaching job... there are alot of foreigners here doing jobs besides teaching. Whilst a few foreigners here make a career from teaching and stay long term, it is viewed by those in the west as something of a stop-over job, for good experience, language learning, character building, or gap-year enjoyment. "Proper job" is also a tasty ale-based alcoholic beverage brewed in Cornwall.

Yes ...I have a friend who worked in Taiwan as a teacher and he tells me it was a great experience...yes its much cleaner, more modern..etc ... but also bigger competition.. not that is too hard to find a teaching job ... but not as easy and fast as in mainland CH ... as in mainland China nowadays the demand for teachers is huuuuge, crazy .. whoever lives in mainland knows that

Put it this way: if people like Mike795 from Canada had been allowed in, they would have closed down their recruiting website quick smart.

That guy can't even write properly when English is his mother tongue. Thanks to the mentality which brought you Li Peng's daughter as head of the gas industry. Retards with oney equals property prices high and tat inflated.

From what I've heard by Taiwan expats then unless you're either sent to Taiwan by your company's HQ, or are a very qualified native speaking English teacher then it's very, very difficult to get a job in Taiwan

Taiwan doesn't have as many opportunities as it used to and certainly not as many as Mainland China just considering the size of the country and its population.

It's a very competitive market because yes Taiwan is a nice place to live in, so you better have qualifications even for teaching.

Don't listen to the long term expats in Taiwan who have been there for 20 years and tell about how easy it is to make it there, things have changed and the gold river has kind of run dry, locals are more qualified, the best teaching opportunities are already taken by long term expats that won't bulge, and so on.

Yes Taiwan is more livable, locals are more civilized, more modern and international minded than Chinese people, yes the air is clean and you can actually drink tap water.

Still it's easier to find a good job in Taiwan than South Korea, and on par with Japan.

taiwan is a much more developed country than china, so age discrimination is a problem, why hire an old fart when you can get a young one to do it cheaper, so if you over 40, your chances of teaching english is pretty low.

taiwan citizens can go to america without a visa approval from the us embassy, just buy your ticket and get on a plane.

if you understand that america feels people from taiwan will travel to america and not stay as illegals because their home country is better, then you understand the real story of taiwan without the political talking points.

perhaps in the 23rd century this travel without a visa will happen in china.

jobs can be had in taiwan but you need reputable sources of experience, taiwan alreadys know everything about fake degrees and bullshit resumes. they dont work in taiwan, that being said, its a great place if you can get in. more crowded in some places, yet more clean and civilized.

the typical chinese has been brainwashed to feel bad for the poor, ignorant, downtrodden capitalists indentured servants that need to freed and become part of the great china, funny how it sounds like a north korea dictators words, but i digress, china usually has trouble with visas to more developed countries, maybe thats why you need a visa to visit your own country(taiwan). yeah right.

the taiwan embassy is in washington dc to get a work visa
the chinese embassy is in new york city to get a visa

hey but why let a few facts get in the way of a great story(fairy tale)

for young teachers, a great website that friends have gotten jobs from www.tealit.com, most foreign teachers do a gig at Hess and then network and move on to greener pastures. many taiwan students are now repatriating back with great english and the jobs for foreigners are shrinking and korea is using filipino teachers on skype to save money, taiwan also does this, if you want to understand the historical culture of china, you will learn more about it in taiwan than china, but that's another discussion, good luck with your job there,
