Q: Does your Chinese wife/husband have basic medical insurance?
My wife does not work and in the past had no medical insurance. I think it is reasonably new that they can buy insurance.
But she just bought, what she says is medical insurance for 80RMB for the flipping year. I have a hard time believing that what she bought (for 80RMB) is worth anything..................
How to apply for individual social insurance
1 insured person must bring one copy for both the original and the copy of second generation intelligent identity card and residence booklet ( ID card need to print two sides/ the page of the name of the residence holder should be printed on the same page with the insured on one A4 paper ):
Note: if the insured person is not himself (herself): the agent must provide himself(herself) the second generation intelligent identity card and the photocopy of ID on A4 paper. The original power of attorney which is authorized by insured person(both the insured person and the agent should press their fingers on this power of attorney)
2 the insured should use black pen to fill in the " social insurance premiums registration form ( individual insurance ) " in three copies then go to the Local Taxation Bureau No.14 to 17 window to handle.
3 individual insured must bring " entrusted withholding local tax ( fee ) agreement " to the following bank for the three protocol: ICBC, China bank, agricultural bank, development bank, China Construction bank. And deposit full social security fees monthly (such as: monthly pay 544 yuan, that should be deposited in full. The pension insurance fee 451.6 yuan: the basic medical insurance premium 84.4 yuan; serious-illness medical care insurance fee of 8 yuan).
4 Please fill in the " simple social insurance fee application form and bring the signed three party agreement to the Local Taxation Bureau No. 14 to 17 window to handle.
5 After three working days, please go to the Local Taxation Bureau No. 9 to 11 window for further handle.
Note: the insured person residence booklet is in which area, need to return to their zone to handle ( the template of the power of attorney is attached behind)
my question I guess, is,,,,, is this good for anything and/or what is it good for........ 84.4 yuan???? cheap!!!!

You sure it is not per month ? I think my wife pays more than that, or maybe hers include the pension as well. Along with it comes a card that has part of the monthly payment accumulated on it, this card can be used for paying at pharmacies and doctors.
It is a basic medical insurance, if you get seriously ill you would want better coverage. We also have insurance with Ping An for covering large hospital bills, if ever needed. The interesting thing about this insurance is that it only needs to be paid for 20 years, after that the coverage remains. If you feel incredibly well you can pull out your money as a retirement plan kind of thing. (including interest, but probably not the 10% PA they said it would be in their sales pitch)
