It's pretty common in Zhuhai. You walk down the street on a sidewalk, you know your destination is on the opposite side of the street. When you get to a zebra crossing you start your way across the street through the ancient game of frogger, once (if) you reach the curb on the other side you may need to jump over a bush or other obstacle as the painted crossing just doesn't go where there is an place to enter the sidewalk.

Shenyang has some of those. But zebra crossings are not for crossing the streets, what makes you think that?
somewhere, yes. close to my apartment, there is a zebra on the crossroad. the sidewalk curb here are about 40-50 cm above the street level on two sides of the zebra... if you turn left and go to other side, there is no problem, but please, do not go straight over the road directly to metro station
I always thought the zebra crossing in China was to show drivers of large black cars where they should accelerate in order to beat the light.

very true. even there are people on the zebra, crossing on green, yet those bastard honking, speeding and let you avoid them, not they avoid you :(
In most cities these Zebra crossings are referred to as target rich environments
The bushes are for zebras to munch on after crossing the road. Why else would a zebra cross the road, especially in China. Chickens are a different story. Do you know the difference between a Chinese chicken and a foreign chicken? The foreign chicken can cross the road.
Scandinavian:
but that one leads to a sidewalk, albeit with a pretty high step up.
Nice with photo documentation !
