Q: Does your V-P-N still work (and other related questions)?

I add the hyphens, as the first time I tried asking this question (sans - - -), my internet crapped out.

Anyways does your's still work? Mine is completely blocked at my office and only rarely works on my home connection, which is annoying to no end.

Also, a techie friend of mine several months back (before things got worse) was telling me about how he uses an "SSH" connection to a server in HK instead of a V-P-N, as its faster and more secure. Anyone know more about what this is exactly and how to set one up?

Finally, anyone hear work from their V-P-N provider on if they'll be able to come up with a work around? I use 12V-P-N and have heard nothing back yet.

Thanks

The blocking of VPN’s started some time ago when the government was having its conference in Beijing (I think). The new communications minister has taken it a step further and installed a device that now seeks out and blocks all VPN communications, particularly those provided by Chinacom. You have two settings usually on your VPN – Open Web and Open VPN. The Open Web mode is working perfectly okay and in fact I am starting to like it more than Open VPN so some good has come from the blocking, for me. The VPN providers are working on solutions and my provider has already put its device into beta testing. Meanwhile the millions of Chinese that also use VPN’s are complaining to the government that this new blocking system is hurting their business so maybe, just maybe the government may rethink its position on VPN blocking and even the stupid, ineffective censorship on the internet altogether. (Pigs at 10 o’clock!) Anyway, you are just going to have to wait a little longer until either the blocking stance is halted or the VPN providers come up with something smarter to get around the problem, a problem I might add, that should not even exist in a free world, right?

Try Googling HMA V P N.  Best damn V P N anywhere.  It includes 256 bit encryption just for the fun of it.

My V P N works fine and has done since before the conference. But it is a top end, fee based, fully encrypted service. I do have to switch IPs more often than I used to but that's it really.

I have said before (many times) with V P Ns you get what you pay for.

My VPN has been down since October.  In fact, none of the three that I use work.  TOR also doesn't work at all.

A question related to this topic;

Can anyone access this site without their VPN?

I used to be able to access this site from work ie. without my VPN but no longer. Has echinacities been blocked by the GFW?

pbrown22:

I'm able to access this site without a VPN.

I don't use a VPN.........  and I just don't get it, why anybody would pay for such a thing. I seem to get around on the internet just fine without one........... no Facebook or youtube, so what.............what else am I missing?

occasionally I have to use one of them free proxies, to get to a site at home............  once in a blue moon....

Hugh.G.Rection:

You don't know what you're missing until you've had it.

The important things you haven't already mentioned that you are missing:

1. The ability to look for the truth when 'they' don't want you to know.

2. Youtube - a veritable treasure trove of really good educational material, (and BS of course).

3. Freedom, you can (virtually) go where you want, when you want, that is something I am willing to pay for.

5. The ability to speak / chat / gossip with other people be they Chinese or not, with reasonable confidence that you aren't being monitored. (256bit encryption gives that confidence and if you're really paranoid upgrade to 512 or 2024 bit, that would take a dedicated CIA level operation to beat).

Well, you'll get what you pay for.

Sometimes free is a lot more expensive than when you pay.

If someone offered you a car for 100RMB it is almost certain it isn't going to be as good as the regular priced one.

I'm not going to name my subscription VPN on open chat, (they might get onto it) but if you want to know IM me and I'll send you the name. Although I don't know if you can start it from China as I'd already subscribed before I came here.

Only one of my free ones still works, others flicker in and out and my business one comes and goes. Xi Jinpeng can go to hell.

I use a good VPN.  I did try HMA but it kicked me out regularly.  I switched to a good one and you can message me if you want the name.  They DO have to help you configure a secure passage through the L2TP route.  Because once they found out I was in China, they beefed it up so I wouldn't be kicked out at all!!!  I've had no problems at all!!  Very happy to use them.  Smile
