No problem.  I come and go from China all the time and I have 140gb of music and 600gb of movies on my laptop and portable hard drive.
They don't care and will never check.
If you can access the sites you can even download torrents in China for songs and movies, although it will take longer because of the horrible internet speeds.

I always travel with my laptop, and a few USB's full of music and movies also.  No one has ever stopped me to check what is inside neither in China nor in USA.  Just the customary turn-on and turn off the laptop at USA security.  But to be extra sure, do not have any photos or movies considered XXX.

As others have said, there is no problem woth USB drives or other devices stuffed with music & movies.

However, just be aware that the lovely US government has the right to search every single file on your devices.  If they are encrypted they have the right to demand that you give them the key.

The worst part is that they do not need ANY reason to exercise this right.  So much for our constitutional right to protection from unwarranted search and seisure.

But for Canadians travelling direct to China, no worries. Pretty sad when you have to worry more about entering the US than you do China. I hate just driving across to go shopping...too much hassle...they think everyone is a criminal.

You will be able to bring your usb with the music downloaded into China. Nobody will stop you and check what is on your USB memory unless they believe you are suspicious and have reason to check everything you have including your USB memory. But chances are they won't check it! If anything just keep cool and don't cause a big scene. That's the only way they may confiscate your items and that's if they have reason to check it and then they find something offensive about the government etc.,
