Q: English phrases you loathe hearing cos they're over-used

As a teacher, I dread having to do some marking of written work, because I know I'll keep getting the same lines...

"As we all know", "Nowadays" and other stuff that they've been drilled into using, but we don't.

Any others???

"And so on..."

I see this on almost every paper! I hate it. It is overused to the extreme.

Especially when it is used after only one or two examples, like, "apples, oranges, and so on." I tell them, just name a third example!

I hate hearing 'No why'.

Because there MUST be a reason for everything, but often it's used to save face.

Im gonna get away from the classroom for a second and answer the most annoying I hear people say on the street. I have doubts wether people actually say these, or want to say something within earshot of a laowai

" Oh My Lady GaGa"

"Your so Crazy!"

-Welcom-u to a-China"

-"HALLO!!!"

-"In China, we..."

-"Look-a-look-a"

-"Cheap-u cheap-u"

-"Very good-a quality!"

-"Hallo, LADY BARRR?"

-"Hallo, MASSAGE???"

And of course taxi drivers who insist on yelling "LEFT" and "RIGHT" despite your speaking proper Mandarin. I hate it...

Howabout the young people who slip basic English words like "here" and "this" and "and" into their Mandarin to impress you?

The three most common answers high school students give to why questions...

"because I think it is interesting"

"because I think it is beautiful"

"because I think it is dangerous"

Hi Shining,

I can TOTALLY relate. First, the "nowadays" one I used to hear in South Korea. Second, if I hear "It's a cultural difference" again I'm going to freak! Third, same for the "Don't get angry" lame-a** comment. :( Lastly, another tiresome one is "Of course blah blah blah."

I think your question is so-so. As we all know, loathsome English phrases is a hot topic among people nowadays.  But every coin has its two sides. The Chinese economic grows faster than the other world countries, and so on. As the university students, we should all do our part to fight loathsome English phrases.

One by one - Usually when given some assignments at work, and how I should complete them.....one by one.

Number one! - Attendent dude at the gym always gives me locker #1.  Number one!

"AnyEnglishWord"-a  -  Cheap-a, Dark-a, At-a a Night-a....etc

Here you are! - Like when they give or present you with something.  I guess it's better than what the Chinese grunt to each other...."Na!"

What western national would start a sentence with "In my daily life, I get up at 6:00, make some breakfast then watch TV for an hour"?

''Seldom''

That word was rarely heard in my life before coming here.

''How are you?' constantly with the same end result of ''I'm fine , sank you and you?'' (already mentioned but it grinds my gears''

''Hallo'' followed by laughter from random divs on the street.

''他听不懂'' firly obviously not an English saying but always hearing that despite understanding everything which was said. The assumption that you can't speak their language does my head in.

ooooohhhh! Good question, I'm enjoying this mini rant!

One phrase that I hate hearing in the West (often in political circles) is 'It's time to..." or "It's time for...". It's such a cliche, and the topic being discussed has often been a problem for many years, so the "It's time to..." line is always well out of date.
