Q: Is environmental consciousness increasing at all in China?
If it is, it sure isn't showing!
In the classes I've done on the subject, many of my students are aware of the problems and challenges facing China in the areas of air, water, and land pollution, but feel that not much can be done about it. We go over some of the possible solutions, such as personal accountability and the need for local (all the way up to national) government agencies to not only pass laws, but also to enforce laws already addressing these situations.
When asked, the students felt that, while they would like to do something, they didn't think that one individual could do anything. Perhaps because of their "collective" upbringing, they failed to realize that many individuals acting together is what society is all about, and by one person speaking up or taking the inititive, much could be done. That being said, I have a hard time keeping them from throwing trash on the classroom floor! They just don't make the connection.
I just read an article a few days ago were two domestic and one American company were accused of dumping some type of lead residue into a local water supply, which made some people sick. If true, and the companies were responsible, shutting them down is a step in the right direction to protect not only the population, but to keep environmental damage containable.
However, like many things that are done in China, one has to wonder whether this action by the government was just done for P.R., or if it is a widespread attempt to get the situation under control...
Yes They are big on recycling and they are getting involved in organic farming and retail china is the biggest supplier of solar tech

Do you wonder why you get down votes?. The question is about environmental pollution, and your reply was that China is the largest supplier of solar panels. What building solar panels has a thing to do with people throwing garbage everywhere.

PS: You do remaind me a lot of another poster, writes like you, gives the same type of replies, claims to be from USA, and spends a lot of time thumbing people down. And very coincidentally, he sort of disapear when you showed up too !

ok i got it now. his first answer was just china making solar panels. and then the phony edited his answer (claiming it had to do with copy/paste issues) your response to happy expat clearly shows you are a bad liar and as american as tang su li jie. editing your answer is a clear indication of a phony.
I would say that their environmental consciousness is increasing, but they aren't doing much about it. As giadrosich said above, people say they don't like all the pollution, but they don't do anything themselves to help. They still throw trash on the floor when inside, and on the ground while outside. While trash on sidewalks may be cleaned up, the trash thrown in the bushes and in random piles in the grass is not.
While there have been success stories of cleaning up a city, such as the river in Shanghai, they are much more rare than stories of yet another environmental disappointment. Someday in the future, it will get to a point where they will feel that they have to clean it up, but I don't know when that will be.
