Did the 3 Gorges from Yichang to Chongqing about a decade ago. I did actually enjoy it, but that's probably more due to the group I went with than the cruise itself. Was with a good group of friends and a steady flow of alcohol meant we could laugh through all the crap.

The scenery is nice, but very reparative. For the first hour it's great but then for the rest of the 3 days it's just more of the same. And couldn't really see far due to the pollution anyway. Every day you go on side trips off the boat, one day we went to a ghost city (I didn't see any ghosts!) another day we went in smaller boats up a side river. It's fine but Chinese style, follow the person with the green flag, tourism.

Most of our time was spent either in the mahjong room getting very competitive, or the bar. In the bar they had events in the evening which were fun in a kind of family oriented wedding kind of way, and when the families had gone to bed the waitresses turned out to be extremely friendly.

The room was small but perfectly adequate with a small bathroom. I can't actually remember but I'm guessing we paid more for better rooms.

This was in 2007, so I'm guessing if you did it now there would be more boats, more people, and all the associated crap you get when countryside folk go on their once in a lifetime holiday.  I was with a good group of friends so had a good laugh, but if I'd been with my family I think I'd have been bored out of my mind.

did the same cruise, they don't have food all the time like ocean cruise ships, so if you miss meal time you're s.o.l. so to speak, i bought extra snacks at different ports to keep in the room. in 2010 it was 2500 each for 4 of us with the presidential suite.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
