Q: Ever been criticized by Chinese for acting Chinese?
I mean doing the same thing you see Chinese do all the time. Or just received some confused looks? What happened?
No but I receive confused looks whenever someone stares at me and I give them kisses from afar (my usual answer to stares), they probably think I am gay or something.

A couple weeks ago, I had an awful flu. I'll spare the gory details, but let's suffice it to say that I did not care to dress like a fashionista to go to the 7-11 near my apartment for multivitamin losanges. I left my apartment in my sweatpants. I never do that normally...I do not splurge on clothes, but I stick to jeans, skirts, and dresses like and woman who moderately cares for her appearance. It just happens that, on that particular day, I was dying.
Oh, the fashion police I met! You would think I lived in a neighborhood where people don't stroll around in their PJs, or that the men always wear shirts, or something. Everyone wanted to know why the laowai was wearing sweatpants!
I said it was so I wouldn't puke on them, but puking could still happen if I got irritated. At least it got the nongs out of my face.

Oh yes hahaha, I usually dress nicely (casual business) but some days when off I am just screw this and go out to the nearby convenience store with sweatpants and a random t-shirt, my neighbors can't help themselves but asking why is the laowai not dressing nicely today, and not discreet about it since I can hear them. I overheard people wondering whether I am a business person or a foreign teacher. At the end their stupidity and ignorance just makes me laugh. In their mind dresscode goes as "formal = business = important" and "casual = foreign teacher = serves china", they could not be further from the truth, I personally know foreign teachers wearing suits and managers in big multinationals going to work in shorts and t-shirt.

Going to the gym is the worst. No, I don't dress in my Sunday best to go to the gym. And the whole way there, I hear, 'Laowai wears casual clothes. Blah, blah, blah.' From guys in stained wifebeaters.
