Grr, need a place to vent. Applied for a job in Shanghai and a week after an interview I was told that I was qualified for the job but too young. I'm 33 So I take it the ideal candidate remembers when steam engines became popular. So anyone else have a similar story?

It is often that if you are applying for a high manager position that you get declined because you are below 40.
Mainly they are afraid that the employees do not take you serious or that you have not enough experience under your belt.
i think it is bullshit and I fought myself up to a high position even so I am younger than you.
But yea I faced the same issues as you before as well and probably will face it again at one point unless I stay here another 10 years in my company
It must be a Chinese company were seniority and tradition prevail, I have found Chinese people don't like answering to a younger boss and grandparents very seldom listen to their kids as well, but it happens in other cultures as well.
In America we call it the "powder butt syndrome", you don't want advice from a child that you put baby powder on their butt years ago" as a child. So parents want take advice from their kids.
Did you apply for a manager of old farts or a geriatric museum?
Some companies also want a manager that is married rather than single, stability and responsibility to keep you as a good financial slave to the company. My company has all teachers over 50 ironically because the young ones are not so stable, one year cowboys, fornication, ktv, tardiness, internet junkies, etc, so they don't bother with any one under 40 without a referral from an existing teacher, we have a 24 yr old son of a teacher here, but that's it for the young.
if your job is ESL, make some money in Korea and come back at 40 when they say your too old to teach young kids.
I have found a strange phenomena in developed countries, they discriminate against the old, in undeveloped they discriminate against the young. The result is the young innovative don't get the country developed very well, funny how that works so well. Philippines would be an exception, everyone over 40 has no job unless they work for the government or own their own business, saving money on labor with 6 month contracts to the young instead of benefits and salary for older workers, but lousy labor law and too much population growth is a bigger factor there.

Sometimes they tell you that as a bullshit excuse not to hire when they found someone else. I've seen employers of ESL do the same thing. Instead of saying" you're too black" they say you're too old/young or some other lame excuse. From my experience with Chinese employers is that they are not straight forward with you. Instead of saying they found someone else or they don't want you, they will make some excuse....When the truth is a lot easier....just a thought though,...maybe you are too young.
If a school tells you this, it is just a nice way of telling someone the school doesn't want you there. I might do this if a young well qualified person asked me for a job but had really bad body oder.

What is really bad body odEr .... Are you German? Do you mean really bad body odOr? Can anyone on this site use the Queen's English properly?
iWolf:
marcos, you pathetic little nobody, it is amusing that you delight in other people's typos and says a lot about what a petty insecure midget you really are. Hahaha, you must be one of those ubiquitous dwarf Argentinians who cultivate a bouffant perm and wear lifts in your shoes and nit pick about trivial matters to prop up your desperate need to be a big man. Sorry to tell you, mini maradona, it just makes you look what you are. Small, petty and sad.
