Q: Ever show off on Wechat with pictures of your hometown?

Social media is just another way to brag about everything you do, how great your life is, ect. ect.  Lots of social media started with good intentions (the unmentionable Facebook for example) however I think Wechat's first, only, and ever use was to show off or score hookups.  Most of the showing off occurs with picture flaunting that falls in the following categories:

Food ->  Any kind of buffet or restaurant that shows how "wealthy" you are.

Foreign products /brands ->   Think Coach, Prada, or Air Jordans.

Travels ->  Primarily showing you're rich or "interesting" because you are doing something others don't.

Gym ->  Trying to convince other people you work hard, even though most people that do this seem to have normal bodies.

For most of those categories, we have the advantage.  I have never purposely taken pictures just to post them on Wechat, but since I already despise the software, I am thinking I will use it to troll just for a side thrill. I'm thinking every photo I post from now on will be photos taken of me every time I go back to my home country.   Next up, me eating huge lobsters!

Does this sound entertaining to anybody else?

You mean a "sight" of me drinking tap water straight from the tap and living to tell about it. Yes, done that. (home town in foreigncountry)

You're very much wrong about the uses of wechat. It's great for joining chat groups or activity groups to meet like-minded people and finding promotions posted by friends. I'm not denying the other uses you mentioned, but they're far from the reason why many people use it.

I know I was generalizing.  But I also find the app a little boorish.  Then again, I'm not a fan of social media.

Wechat is pretty good. group chats, one on one chats, share photos of the kids, keep up to date without having to phone people. A good way to keep in touch with people who you might otherwise never get to know.

Facebook is great for family and friends in the west.

Cant say I see many people boasting on wechat. All I see is photos of people sharing their enjoyment of things. Nowt wrong with that.

Yes.

-the blue sky

- the cars pulled to the side so an ambulance can pass

-the tidy recycling bins which line the streets

-the well-planned sidewalks and bike paths filled with children walking to free and good public schools, no worries of being mowed down by cars/e-bikes

-the university which they can't cheat or bribe their way into

-the trees and birds outside my window, and the area is not rural

-the reasonably clean public bathrooms which have hand soap and TP

-the fantastic public library which has fireplaces, comfortable seating, books from all over the world, free technology and ESL classes

but you know what? They probably wouldn't be jealous, and they'd wonder where all the Ferraris and Big Bling Malls were.

My wife was truely amazed when she saw cars give way to an ambulance back in my hometown.
