Q: Ever visit the zoo here?
Just got back from the zoo with my kid and found it pretty decent as zoos go. The area with all the primates was an eye opener as at that early hour of the morning they were pretty passive, that is except for one enclosure that was well in earshot of an entertainment pavilion that was playing some very load techno. The monkeys in there were all going absolutely mental. But it wasn't until we were leaving and decided to take one last spin around the park in one of their tour buses that I got a real surprise. The lady driving was giving a running commentary of the animals, and did so adequately until we reached one area of the bird sanctuary which had on show toucans, cockatoos, macaws, a veritable host of exotic, winged creatures of the sky, across which she casually waved her hand as we passed and proclaimed "These are all parrots." All I could think was "Make a fu**ing effort love, you've got kids listening to this sh*t."
I've been to one good zoo in China - that was in Dalian. That zoo is pretty famous and is marketed as a high end zoo and the animals generally seemed to be well taken care of. I have also been to a deplorable zoo in a Tier 3 city. It had a "monkey mountain" which was maybe ten meters high surrounded by a fence with people gawking at the monkeys and throwing popcorn and food wrappers at them. The poor monkeys looked so starved that this might have actually been a good thing. There was also some sort of panther or leopard in a tiny cage huddled in the one corner of shade with people grabbing on the bars and shaking them to try to make the animal move... after that experience I have vowed to avoid zoos at all costs so that my money doesn't go to fund animal cruelty.
I went to one in Shijiazhuang. Saw a panda up close and I was allowed to feed the monkeys. It was good.
Been to a few... some okay, most look like they don't have a clue how to treat animals.
I wouldn't suggest it. Not only because the animals don't look well cared for but the Chinese act like insane chimps... tossing stuff at the animals... screaming at them... sticking their heads in the cages... taking 1000 pictures and blocking the view.
It makes you wonder... did I come to the zoo to look at animals or the animals that claim to be human?

The animals behind the bars are often more dignified than the animals outside the bars.
Guilin has the largest collection of tigers in the world, I never wanted to see it. It is against the law to kill tigers, so sick and old tigers are not euthanized, they're just left to die. The tigers bones etc are worth a fortune for tiger wine etc.
I have been to Tianjin zoo twice. It is a horrible place that makes me both sad and angry. The elephhants and chimps have gone insane due to lack of stimulus. I saw one guy trying to hit a crocodile with a stick to see if it was real. I wanted to throw him in the water, he would have found out quickly if it was real then. They force monkeys, bears and big cats to perform stupid circus tricks too even though it is now illegal. The tigers and lions had there canine teeth removed. I was outraged going there. I wish places like that didn't exist.

Yeh, we saw a show where they had bears and monkeys dressed up and stuff. It was kind of messed up. Half expected them to wheel out John Merrick and some bearded ladies.
The zoos are bad. The animals suffer from tumours and have all gone mental. The chinse people are just amazingly shitty. Its just not worth it to go. You will always leave in a worse mood than when you started.
Though one time a dad and a kid where throwing rocks at the monkeys to make them move. So i started throwing rocks at the dad and kids head. Not hard but hard enough that they ran away while i yelled " do you like that you monkeys?"
Chimelong in GZ is the one exception i have seen. Its so damn expensive that they have to put some care into the animals. Spent money on the housing. Lots of room. They seem well fed and cared for. Still not great because the Chinese are allowed to go but its still the best i have seen.
