Q: For expats - Is there a time of the year when you miss your homeland more than usual, if at all?
I seldom find myself missing my homeland, as opposed to missing loved ones, but somehow or other ANZAC Day does it.
I grew up attending marches with my father and continued that tradition with my own children, including dawn services. I myself marched, as a serving soldier.
And these days I know my children follow on with this as they get involved in ANZAC activities. Probably one or two of them were at a gunfire breakfast this morning..
As I now have a stepdaughter living with my family in Australia I'm wondering what she's making of not having to attend uni today.
So, the question.... Is there a time of the year when you miss your homeland?

for christmas and in summer for clean lake swimming and sailing
I miss Christmas time the most because that is the only time that all of my close and distant family members have a holiday and we all have a mini reunion. The best part is we don't give gifts only the children get something but the adults all bring home cooked food/drinks and we get together over a few days and celebrate and I often miss that when I am in the office here on Christmas day.
March 15th. Start of trout fishing season. March browns and Greenwell's glory wet flies on rough streams.
ANZAC Day. This afternoon I listened to the Dawn Service at Gallipoli and it was terrific.
It finished with the national anthems of Turkey, New Zealand and Australia.
The NZ anthem is one of the best in the world.
They also had the anthems at the big game at the G today but only semi abbreviated versions. I found that to be disappointing. They must have thought the 90,000 people at the ground were unable to keep quiet long enough to get through.
And this will be the 6th straight year I've spent the day in China without a two-up game in sight.
I miss my country especially during Christmas when I used to buy a Christmas tree put presents underneath the trees and sing some Christmas songs.
