Following problem:
My parents are about to visit me in Shanghai in July. Their flight arrives on a Friday at 14:45 from Doha, Qatar and would leave with China Eastern on Monday 14:50 to Bangkok.
Looking at the official arrival/departure times, this would violate the 72-hours limit by 5 minutes. Does anybody know how this issue is handled in practice? Do the official times count or the actual arrival/departure time at immigration counter? Where to find more information about this issue? Please advise!

Though I have no experience with visa free travel in China and I didn't even know it existed I do have experience with getting the maximum out of a visa.
Here in Dubai you will not overstay your visa as long you have gotten your exit stamp before the ending time and I am quite sure it is the same in all airports. The exit stamp is usually given right before you enter the terminal.
That means your parents won't have any problems since they have to be at the gate earlier than departure anyway.

I finally got reply from the airline, that said it is calculated on official arrival/departure times... does not make much sense too me... but thats china i guess^^
I recommend you asking some travel agency... 5 mins won't be a problem but absolutely you don't want to put them in risk.
