Q: Explain this CULTURAL DIFFERENCE please?

There's a unit I teach (we have a planned carriculum) where I have to ask "What are your greatest accomplishments?" and "What are three things that make you special?" as warm-up questions.

When I ask Chinese women, even extremely successful businesswomen, the answer is always, "Nothing." and "I'm just normal, not special."

When I ask a Chinese man, usually it starts, "I so handsome, I so clever, I so strong.." and lasts the hour.

Also, my female students seem willing to rise to any challange put before them in the classroom. If a male student finds something too difficult they chew it over for about five seconds, throw their hands up in the air and say,. "TOO DIFFICURT. WE SHOULD PLAY! CLASS NO IS FUN!"

Why?

I guess the question I was trying to ask is, "Why doesn't China consider having such pussyish nancy-men running everything a loss of face?"

Just from the simple answers from those Chinese.

Female are being humble there, it's considered good tradtional merits of Chinese girls.
Male are being chauvin there, in tradtional Chinese way boy should be seemed as clever and manly.

Female takes challenges is because Chinese girls like to be seemed polite by not turning down things
Male dont like difficult things is because Chinese boys are spolied, lazy, and rude maybe, it's not a big deal if they decided not to do something, it's not losing face, boys always make decisions in the traditional ways.

Those just are certain types of Chinese boys and girls you teach, not all of Chinese girls or boys like that....

That's basically exactly opposite to my culture in every way.

I like a snowy Happy new year, rather than a no sky one...Beijing's time to ban the cars---the only solution for the time being...

It's true, the women are probably just being modest, or maybe no one else has ever considered anything to do an accomplishment. They work hard because they probably care what you think, and think your advice is good. The men are like teenagers, they don't want someone telling them what to do, and they'll boast to you.

Believe me, it's a different reaction from guys when you're a girl expat. Sure, there are some who don't want to do the work, but they don't brag, and at least they're usually friendly. However, there are also some that will do the work because they care what I think. It helps if you're cute girl, just saying.

I'll take your advice under consideration.
