Q: Extending work visa for a short period?

Hi,

So I booked a non refundable ticket back home, but I realized the departure date is 3 days after my work visa expires. Is there any way to extend a work visa for like 10 days or a month?

Go to the PSB before your residence permit expires and they can put a 1 month tourist visa on. You cant work on a tourist visa. But I expect your job will have finished by then anyway.

No, there is no way to extend your working visa but there is way to get humanitarian purpose visa (the same one you get when you change the company and your new work permit will take 15 working days).

You shall go to 出入境管理局 (Exit and Entry Administration Bureau) and talk to them openly about your situation - they should be able to help you.

For the better result I suggest you take with you Chinese speaking person ...

Hotwater:

When contracts finish the person can get a 30-day tourist visa from the PSB with no problems.

Yes, but it can be even longer - basically the decision is up to local imigration police.

No it's not! Anyone who is here working can legally get a 30-day tourist visa from the PSB just before their resident permit expires.

What's a humanitarian visa? Is that not to do with earthquake rescue teams etc? I ask, because I follow a rescue team based in Scotland. Called "International rescue" of all things. The team is composed of firemen, mountain rescue, and medics. They arrived in HK after an earthquake, and were not allowed into China. Is a humanitarian visa something to do with NGOs. Nominally, religious NGOs?

Also - crap! Yes, you can 'extend' your work visa... which basically means, the company re-applies for it. Extension is different to the initial application in that you don't need to leave the country, provide Criminal History checks, etc (though you'll probably need another medical exam).

Although, I doubt that you'd get one for 30 days only... you never know!

Janosik:

English translation is 'Humanitarian purpose visa' on the form.

It basically means that you can prepare everything well for leaving the country.

I do not want to argue with Hotwater but when I was asking them if they can grant me longer than one month as I during new year season was changing location so they said in case the things would go slow they can decide to give me longer than 30 days. Did not need that though so I do not know.

And OP really cannot extend his working visa as it would mean his company would have to assist and this is apparently not the case. He apparently is not talking about renewing of his work permit and residence permit - as actually there is nothing like working visa.

But I probably expressed myself awkwardly

Hot is right above: 30-days L or 30-days RP extension is warranted at completion of the Contract.

School must take FT to PSB a week before RP expiration and 30-days extension will be granted without question asked.

Purpose of extension is 'preparing for the exit from China' or 'getting new job/RP sponsor'.

One must exit China at the end of extension or apply for new job/get new RP sponsor in the meantime.

Humanitarian visa? It doesn't exist as per listed visas in China. Here is one post on web about 'Humanitarian visa in China':

http://onestop.globaltimes.cn/questions/conversionhumanitarian-visa/

Q: So I am on a humanitarian visa in Shanghai. I am wondering if there is a way to convert it to a tourist visa? Do I need to go to hk and use a visa agent? My new employer says that the two weeks given from my old employer isn’t enough time for them to process everything and they will let me go cause they won’t start the process from scratch. Basically my old employer canceled my resident permit and my work permit and put me on a two week stay visa. Now I’m out of a job and most likely want to stay in China on a tourist visa until I find a new one. I’m a USA citizen.

A: Hi Stefan. We’re not sure what you mean by a humanitarian visa – it sounds to us like you were in the country on a work visa (Z Visa)? Anyway, we’re sorry to hear about your work situation. There is a circumstance by which those who have just lost their residence permit can switch immediately to a 30-day tourist visa (see ‘Your Residence Permit’ on this page), but it sounds like that time has passed. If you want to switch to a tourist visa then the only way you can do it now is to leave the country, go to somewhere like Hong Kong (although there are also visa runs to North Korea and other places) and apply for a tourist visa before returning.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
