Q: External hard-disk troubles

Here is the situation.

In one month both of my external disks almost died, at least I hope it is an almost and not a definitely. One quite new (only 6 months old) and another perhaps around a couple of years. I'm not that worried about the oldest one. It's the newest one that I relied on and kept most of my photos and documents. Now I feel quite stupid for doing so but who would imagine such a tragedy. And plus where else can I keep all the movies, music etc. considered my laptop is a wreck and has a very limited storage capacity.

Anyone experienced the same in China and tried to recover the data in some way. How much have you paid and has it worked?

Thanks

check your computer for viruses or other problem with it. and the hard disk you bought check the company of it. WD and Hitachi hard disk are much better as far  as i have used them . you format all your hard disk , check it for bad sectors. if you have the receipt and there is warrant in it go for it and change it before things and time get worst in it. about pictures save it on msn, photo bucket, google Picasa, make a personal account in it you can save many pictures, you will need proxy for that. you can upload them to your email inbox keep them as draft messages. format your whole computer or laptop make the partition again and put a good anti virus in it . use the hard disk and your laptop in humane way do not make it a football. they are very much fragile. i have seen guys they never care of these things

bigasspanda:

Actually, I treated them very well. I know they are fragile and must be handled with care. The problem is that everything happened so suddenly that I had no time even to copy anything not to mention scan it with a virus or similar. The newest one just started making some strange noises and then, when I tried to copy everything, blocked and then disappeared from the pc, which couldn't recognize it anymore. Something similar happened to the second one, which probably was affected by a virus. But cannot be recognized anymore by the pc.

I bought both of them back home so it is quite impossible to have them fixed or changed since I'm not going home until next winter.

Fortunatelly, I have some photos on Picasa, Facebook, QQ and e-mail but not all of them. Some are quite old and important memories...

So what I would like to know is about data recovery with the assistance of a specialist in China. Any clue about the price and ability. I  asked around but the people I know have no contacts with those specialists or simply have never experienced the situation.

Thanks for your help!

As Xerxes mentioned, check your system first to see if you have any virus.

Before you make any other step, is it still possible for you to make a copy of the files (pictures, etc) of this damaged hard disk?

If not, then you have two possibilities:

1) to recover your data through a specialist, which in China may be quite expensive and also not always on the top of the quality

2) try to recover the data yourself by installing a program on your laptop which will check your hard disks. Recuva is a good one, but I don't know if it's free. Otherwise, search on Google "Data recovery", then you'll have all the choices and advices.

bigasspanda:

As stated above, I cannot access them anymore. The Pc doesn't read them at all. So no way to copy the data on the PC.

And I kind of tried to recover the data with those REcovery programs they have for free on line but nothing. Thanks for the suggestions!
