Hi, I am in China on my sons Z visa. (Family visa) I have been offered a job, for which I am qualified, and I need to know, can I get a wok visa while still in China? It seems ridiculous to have to go to Hong Kong when I am legally able to stay in China?
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think so. This is new to me, but to get Z you must exit China, and apply at Chinese Embassy, usually in your home country. You can't apply for Z in China, doesn't matter what your current visa status is.
You must present Working permit and Invitation letter in original to get Z visa at Chinese Embassy.
If you want to apply for Z in HK, Invitation letter with HK Z pick-up must be confirmed by SAFEA (Foreign Expert Bureau).
You can get detailed, first hand info about your Q at SAFEA. Enter 'SAFEA' in search above for address and contact no. in your Province.
Contact numbers and address on the web link are Provincial Headquarters details. Don't look for your city's SAFEA, just dial no. and seek info and advice. Most numbers on the weblink have Chinese English speaker answering the phone.
Don't send an email, if you need prompt reply. Phone is better.

Thank you. I was hoping to avoid leaving, but if needs must

you realize that every time that you do that, it adds that reference to the search, right? So every time that you tell someone to search for "S---A" using the search options it actually reduces the chances of them finding the answer to their questions.

@Spider: 'add reference to the search'? What is that? Do I get any extra coats?
There is a thread, where you can find address, phone no. and email address of Provincial SAFEA anywhere in China. If poster doubts about sincerity of my reply, she/he is free to dial Gov. office, and seek info and advice.
That web link should be on 'stickies', however we don't have sticky notes, so I must repeat 'add SAFEA in search above' few times a day.
I have very good experience on dealing with SAFEA in 4 or 5 different Provinces. I'm looking for the feedback of somebody, who's pants are still clean, after he had used no. on the web link, beside me.

it is possible to change from marriage visa to Z in the country - with the right agency at least.
icnif77:
Is it? I'm not familiar with marriage visas, but as I know, you must exit China, and apply for Z at Chinese Embassy.
Probably, that's a conversion from marriage visa to Z/Residence permit.
What agency did you use/recommend?
dom87:
My company employed a worker who is married to a chinese. He had only marriage visa when he entered China and then he just got a working permit. He had a resident permit which did not change. So I dunno but seems rp is not connected to his wp
