Q: Favourite book about China?

Looking for something new for my kindle, any suggestions? I enjoyed Ma Jian (everything by him), and was considering reading Dream of Ding Village next, has anyone read it?

Try "1421 - The year China discovered the world" .  This was followed by "1434 - The year China started the Renaissance", or something like that.  It will give you an interesting glimpse into history and how China played a hitherto unrecognised role in Western history.

DrMonkey:

Both books are from Gavin Menzies, who's work is highly controversial and rejected by historians ans sinologist (Chinese ones included...). The proofs he advances are poorly documented and/or contradictory. His latest book, The Lost Empire of Atlantis, is pure crank work.

Yes, they are controversial, but it makes for an interesting read and you cannot deny the voyages of Zheng He.  He was real and his voyages did happen, this is common Chinese history.
