I remember a few years ago there was a guy trying to cycle around the world.  His first stop in PRC, his bike got stolen.

So cool.  I've been researching similar.  My goal is to Hike/Cycle the Taklamakan.  Yes, the Military cops are a big obstacle.  Some claim they will not let one enter the southern access points to the Taklamakan. Not exactly true, but permits are just about impossible.

My adivice is do not consider 'froeigner-friendly' hotels along the way.  Camp outside when/where possible, but if u need lodging, then go low-dollar and someone will take u in.

Anyway, the issue is are u into the Takla?  SHG to Urumuqi is definetly cool too. But if we join forces, I say on to Kazakhstan!

you should check serpentza you tube channel, they have ridden motorcycles and stayed in small town hotels in over 24 provinces.

they have a video "conquering southern china", it's been out a while and probably free now

I think the "conquering northern china" is still monetized in some manner.

Actually the law about foreign passport hotels has been lifted but as usual nobody in China keeps up with the laws. They still need your passport but the 3 star or higher requirement is gone. The national law change may take a decade to filter down to all the provinces.

hey diverdude. i was just thinking ahead to next summer. i have visa issues this summer so i cannot go at the moment. if you still have this crazy idea next summer, sure we can join forces. will private message you my wechat

diverdude1:

My route is open to modification of course, but I do consider Kashgar to be the Absolute Must.  Ideally cycle from Kashgar to Khotan and enter the desert there, follow the river north and get back on the Silk rode and head east. Ideally to Turpan, or if still feeling fit and have the ¥, go on up to Urumuqi. Fly home from there.  I have read (info so hard to find, that a type of military police block known southern entrances into Takla ), but I figure there must be a way. Believe it or not there are still nomads with camel caravans in that desert to this day.

I know a couple of guys who rode bikes from Zhuhai to somewhere in Xinjiang a couple of years ago. No mean feat and kudos to them for the effort.

(Dramatic music)

But they did it not for the experience, the challenge, the desire to see China up close and personal, nor just for shits and giggles.

These clowns did it for self agrandisement. Wankers. They scored dozens of sponsors for their world record attempt..... except there was no chance of actually setting a world record.....got some gullible business to pay for a coffee table book to be published (with all profits going to the two stooges). Needless to say, a few hundred pics of highways and villages with rubbish strewn about wasn't a big seller.

On the plus side, one of the clowns was pretty fat when they left. He looks like he's got aids now.

But it is doable, in fact since these guys did it, several more locals have done the same trip (without sponsors and fanfare). Go for it dude!!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
