Q: First time Z visa for Canadians?

I am Canadian and am getting my first ever Z visa.

Am I required to get it in Canada? Can I get it in Hong Kong or Bangkok.

I called the embassies but no one knows.

Best choice will be Canada. Not sure about Hong Kong anymore. You can get it in Bangkok too but you need your Canada citizenship certificate.

It depends, which School in which Province will sponsor it.

School must write on Invitation letter, where FT wants to pick-up her/his Z. Then, ILetter must be aproved by SAFEA (Foreign Expert Bureau). Same office will issue your Working permit. At my 1st Z in Tianjin, HK pick-up wasn't granted, and I was required to return home (EU). I guess, SAFEA won't approve HK pick-up, if 1st time. I guess, I'm not sure about that!

I got my Z in HK a month ago, sponsored from School in Fujian. Before I signed Contract with School, I had several offers, but all required Z pick-up in my home country.

I'm in China, so HK pick-up suits me cheaper/better.

If you want to get your Z visa in HK the paperwork needs to say so. There are a few threads about this on here.

I would just go back to Canada to get it. Ok, it costs money and time etc, but once you start working a Chinese contract you might be hard pushed to find time to go home. Unless your a teacher of course, becuase they only seem to work 40 hours a month for 8 months of the year.

It's definitely still possible to get your Z in Hong Kong, I did it a month ago and got mine without any trouble, but your letter of invitation must state that you have to apply there.

My employer is in Guangzhou.

if your invitation is to send you to HK , then you can get the z visa in HK.

Why you can get it in HK? 1 if you have hong kong Id or your have hong kong work visa . otherwise, you can not go to HK for the z visa.

Of course, in China, if you have "guanxi", you can buy to change your invitation without having aforesaid requirement then you can go to hk for the  z visa

icnif77:

Not true Jay!

Invitation letter originate in China. It must be approved by FEBureau (SAFEA), especially 'place of pick-up Z'. In some provinces (Beijing, Tianjin, and few others) FEB will demand Z pick-up in applicant's home country.

Once ILetter is approved, it must be mailed together with Working permit to applicant's address in HK, which can be any address (Hotel) in HK.

Reason for mailing originals to applicant's address is 'you cannot present copies to the Chinese Embassy, not in your home country or anywhere else.

There's no need to hold HK ID, to get Z visa at HK Chinese Embassy.

I just got my 1st Z visa a couple of weeks ago. Invitation letter said HK pick up, I have never had HK ID or HK work visa before.

icnif77:

That's confirmation, 1st Z can also be from HK Embassy. I wasn't sure about that.

For my 1st Z in Tianjin, I had to return home, and School was paying for the trip. I was sure, School will do anything in their 'power' to get HK pick-up.

Just a clarification, I don't have a Canadian passport, so I don't know if it possible with every passport.

Origin of passport doesn't matter! If SAFEA stamp/grant Invitation letter with HK Z pick-up, it's possible to get it in..... 'Chungking'

icnif77:

I am not sure of other province but in shenzhen, it really does work like it. when applying for the invitation letter online, the pick up place can be chosen by applicant.  yes true, usually it should be their home country's address as pickup place. but if he is hk citizen like having hong kong id, can change the pickup place to HK. That' what I know of.

icnif77:

I got rejected once in Tianjin in 2011, and I was required to return to EU, and apply for Z there.

I don't know many details about that, but School was paying for the trip. I'm sure, they did everything to get Z in HK.

Later I read, Beijing, Tianjin, and two other province capitals require FT get Z in home Embassy.

Few months ago, every job I applied on eChina told me, I can get Z only in EU.

Fujian didn't have any problems with HK pick-up a month ago, so I'm guessing it depends, in which Province ILetter is issued.
