Q: FOB ESL teacher pay

This should probably be a post on some teacher union thread, but...

How much do you think a fresh off the boat, brand spanking new (eg, career changing), non-teaching experienced ESL teacher should be paid (assuming actual TEFL qualification - but that's about all).

Most Chinese teachers get about 300-5000 (if they're lucky) per month - amounts which would make most of us balk! And yet, some would say that 7500 is still way too low for an FT.

Some will also say "yes, but Chinese teachers also have private classes on the side"... and what's to stop the FT doing the same?

Is ability in the skill being taught more important than the actual ability to teach it?

Simple answer. If my daughters school wanted extra money from me to pay for a "native english" ex pat teacher, I would say no. Not outright. I would offer to be involved in the interview.

After the interview I would take him to the bar, get him or her drunk, and ask probing questions.

No fucking way will mcdonalds teachers teach my kid.

I would need to evaluate on evidence. I am not a pretend engineer. Why the fuck would a pretend teacher expect me to pay them to do a job they know fuck all about?

If the applicant was qualified... No problem.. I would pay.
