Q: Foodie cities in China?

Hey, i'm kinda new here. Was wondering what are some 'foodie cities' with decent travel destination near them in China? I want to spend the last bit of my vacation eating some good food but also see some sights.

Good food?  In mainland china?

Good luck, all I've been able to find is barely edible slop.

haha,, wanna trip out your 'foodie' buddies back home?  Go to the Yang lin (sp?) Dog Festival.  you will have bragging creds over all your compatriots nigh on forever.

of course you will also be mentally scarred for life. hard to believe humans are so cruel, but you can see for yourself first-hand that we* are.

Everyone knows that all Chinese food is 'very delicious' and 'very famous', regardless of the fact that most of it tends to be over-salted, doused in cooking oil when cooked, may contain toxic ingredients and (in some provinces) they use way too much chili pepper.

MSG is the preferred added cooking ingredient (yum yum)

Want good Chinese food?

Try Hong Kong and Taiwan as Englteachted suggests if you value your taste-buds and long-term health.

Beijing - there is a convenience store called April Gourmet that has a good range of imported deli products that are both tasty and safe.

Just go to any tier-1 and you will have a vast selection of food from all over China. Still going to eat gutter oil and tons of MSG though, China food tastes great but standards and quality are the bottom of the low. For quality Chinese food hit your local Chinatown or go to HK and Taiwan.

Hong Kong food is generally low on taste and quality I find, as the normal eating places don't have the competition they have in China

In addition to my previous post, while there is choice for Chinese food in tier 1, don't expect too much from non-Chinese food, the "Foreign food" in China basically is a diluted version of the real deal and tastes like crap, and the rare good places (usually owned by expats) that serve real Foreign food are totally overpriced.

There is no foodie culture in Mainland China. All the Chinese I know and who call themselves foodies still only eat Chinese food and think Foreign food will make them sick, these are educated urbanites from large cities LMBO.

Shining_brow:

I find it ridiculous the number of Dalu ren who have gone overseas, but still think Chinese food is so much better... I get that what you're brought up with will have an impact... but seriously! I met one woman who spent 5 years in Melbourne - a HUGELY multicultural city - and ONLY ate Chinese food!!!

Shining -> Yes, it's most funny when they claim to be foodies or culinary connoisseurs yet can't name any sort of cheese beside the processed crap (using brand names like Milkana, etc... WTF), don't know any other Italian dish beside pizza and spaghetti, think that French cuisine is limited to the overpriced gastronomic stuff, Japanese only eat raw fish, etc... now I don't pretend to be a connoisseur myself, neither do I claim to come from a country known for its cuisine, we've got good stuff but Germany pales worldwide in comparison to Southern Europe, but damn those Chinese who go abroad and only eat Chinese food or instant noodles, it's an insult to the local cuisine.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
