Q: Foreigners' bad behaviors in China?

More and more foreigners live or study in China, but some of them can be not that polite or qualified. They even claimed abused or terrified by the Chinese. Some of them feel like special as a foreigner, complaining about everything.. Are they really being a good foreigner? How many bad behaviors come across to you? Let's talk about it.

That's normal everywhere you go, it's not a China specific thing.

Every country has a foreign population and there will always be a small percentage who get themselves in trouble.  The troublemakers can be, and are from pretty much everywhere, China included.

I know for 2 or 3 foreigners with not suitable behaviour in China:

- Fuk., Xinjiang - Ozz and USA guy were both working at the Primary school in the city. They were drunks and pills abusers.

USA guy left the city without telling anybody and Ozz-man told me in the middle of the Contract, he's going to Guangzhou or Shenzhen.

We weren't working at the same Primary, but  later I heard he was dismissed, 'cause constant alcohol breath smell.

I've never heard about them again.

- Jianou, Fujian - I worked together with USA dude at the High school. A month after I got dismissed, he was dismissed, too.

However, he had to leave China in 7-days, which is usual always after very bad Contract violation or crime was committed.

Later, he contacted me for the help with SAFEA, but he refused to tell me reasons for the dismissal. That was my condition to dial Fujian SAFEA in his name.

I generally don't know too many details or other examples, 'cause as soon as I see BS, I walk away. Anywhere in the world.

I forgot one more: black dude from Africa, who lived in the same apartment before me in Jixian, Hebei.

After I moved in, I found syringe, candle and metal spoon by the window. I packed everything in the bag and gave it to the School's rep. with: 'I found this on the window sill. It doesn't belong to me!'

Few weeks later, I got request of the city's neurosurgeon, head of the huge hospital to practise oral English. We had only one 'class'/big dinner for two of us. That was the case, when I had to be carried out of the Hospital completely drunk. Only in China!

In real, MD wanted to see me, 'cause hard drug abusers look like .....if you know, what I mean.

I believe, cops went after the African instead after me.

You've gone wrong at the very start by assuming all foreigners are the same. I'm as culturally different as someone from Africa or South America, as I am to you.

Of course some foreigners behave badly, but some behave well. It's just the same as some Chinese people behave badly and some behave well. The problem is that many Chinese falsely work on the assumption that foreigners are all the same, and when they witness bad foreign behavior they think all foreigners are like this.

You probably couldn't find a country on earth, where the locals don't complain about foreigners and their behavior. Most of the time it's not even bad behavior, it's just different to what the locals are used to.

I tend to not want to socialize with any of the new foreigners that come to our city because of all their bad habits. They drink until the early hours of the morning and then wonder into the classroom smelling of alcohol. T guy from the UK was given a verbal warning and then asked to leave within a month and had the audacity to blame the school. The guys from the US promised innocent Chinese girls the the sun and the moon in order to get them into bed. When Chinese people speak of their bad habits they do not mention the person by name or nationality. They simply say "foreigner". I live in China and every time that a foreigner messes up then it simply makes it difficult for the rest of us to live in peace. I have had some people openly say rather harsh things about Chinese people and the culture in front of me. Its sometimes hard to keep quiet about it as my wife is Chinese and we have a daughter. I happen to love Chinese people, the country and the culture. If you do not have something nice to say about someone then keep quiet.

Foreign people in my city are 70% rude and unqualified. There is even a foreign owned bar that refuses most foreign people entry, haha.
You're right about the feeling special part. They come and think they're great and play tricks on women and people in general.

I would say however there are more foreigners who don't associate with said crowd. The bad ones are definitely the majority though.

Englteachted:

Chinese guys don't lie to women to get them into bed? I notice you reworded your post. And I notice you don't list examples of said rude behavior.

Do they, make their children use the street as a bathroom?

Do they, follow Chinese around taking photos?

Do they, drive in a dangerous manner, running red lights and driving the wrong way?

Do they, start companies and cheat their customers and staff?

etc etc etc

I didn't make a biased list. How could I. Your version of credible evidence seems to be different from mine. I also didn't reword anything. My initial post was written without even a back space most likely. You're such a strange person you know?

I knew GreatTao was going to start up this sort of thread eventually... Granted, being Chinese and reading a LOT of bad press about his country and people makes it that much more likely - but just given the general tone of the (reincarnated) posts s/he's  added to...

Firstly, - statistically, against what estern and others may have hinted (or said outright), the VAST MAJORITY of foreigners who come to China are NOT the 'bad behaviour' type. We know this because we're still here, and still get visas, and don't end up on the front pages of newspapers every day..

Secondly, what is defined as 'bad behaviour'? Sure, being drunk at work... and there are a lot of those (and those with hangovers). But, again, the majority are not like that! (and, if they were, then the school has the responsibility there to do something about it... not just pander to parents for the money!)

Let's look at the 'abused or terrified by the Chinese'... I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, but I'll take it to mean 'been scammed'... and yes, this does happen a LOT!!! I find it amusing when Chinese people tell me not to trust Chinese business people! The reason it happens is because the norms of civilised behaviour are often ignored here, in order to get a quick buck (how many of us are actually paying tax that actually goes to the tax department??)

Other bad behaviour... eg - drunken louts in public... well, I think Chinese win that competition hands down! Being rude and obnoxious... tuhao! Breaking laws with impunity... again, Chinese win hands down (from the highest official to the lowest farmer... everyone breaks rules and laws here... there's very little respect for why laws and rules are in place).

Guys lying to girls to get into their pants... something that happens, everywhere around the world! We just have an edge (the ability to actually make it happen!)

I just got back after another couple of flights... and it's just amazing the number of locals who don't give two tosses about the Civil Aviation Authority and Regulations (or, to put it simply, the basic 'don't get out of your sear, or turn on your phone, till the plane has stopped") I"m sure if I have 1 mao for each time a person does that, I'd be a billionaire!!!!

SunYat Sen's Mausoleum, Nanjing.. lots of 'no photography' signs... and who is it breaking those rules? The locals... again! EVERY single foreigner (that was instantly recognisable) actually respected the rule....

GreatTao... you should remember that while there will be bad apples in the barrel, Chinese have relatively little experience in dealing with other cultures, whereas most (all??) who come to China do have that experience. We have a saying... people in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.

China's foreign population....and by that I mean people who don't look south-east Asian.......Are in general actually quite mild and very few. Compare Chinas foreigners to other country and china has a pretty good set up.

5,000,000 Chinese in USA vs 250,000 total westerners in China (1st number is bigger). Your question was legit until

"They even claimed abused or terrified by the Chinese. Some of them feel like special as a foreigner, complaining about everything.. Are they really being a good foreigner? How many bad behaviors come across to you? Let's talk about it."

Complaining about being harassed is bad behavior? Were you one of the retards I yelled at for trying to take my photo?

Just because someone is an asshole does not mean they're behaved badly. Especially when  compared to typical Chinese behavior.

I love it when accounts say 'when in rome' but people who actually adopt that mantra and behave like the Chinese are then criticized by those same accounts.

ScotsAlan:

"Retards" It's the simple words that seperate us englteached. I have a brain damaged sister. A few years younger than me. She has been in nappies for more than 40 years. She can't talk. Can't walk. Can't feed herself. All because of a fever when she was 6 months old. Retard? Fuck off with that word. I have seen disability. Not of the sort that is wheeled out for photoshoots. I have seen the disabilities that are hidden. My first job was in the hospital my baby sister lived in. It was normal to me. Spent every weekend my formative years there. From age 5 to age 15. Please don't use that word.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
