Q: Foreigners in China that want to spread a religion - right/wrong?

My wife's 'sister' (cousin) recently told me that her English teacher at Uni is always trying to preach to her about Jesus. It really confused her because she liked the teacher but couldn't understand why she was talking about Jesus and God with her so much.

As far as I am aware preaching like this by foreigners is not allowed here, and personally I think that is a good thing. What do you think about foreigners coming to China and trying to 'convert' people, especially young impressionable people?

People all over the world are spreading their religions or beliefs on others all the time. Some I agree with, some I don't, but that is just how it is.

However, you should not be doing this in a work place. And I think even if you are here on a work visa, it stipulates that you don't get involved in political or religious affairs.

Yea, its wrong, and people who do it should be fired. It unethical because the teacher is taking advantage of the balance of power that exists between teacher and student.

It's 100% wrong if they are doing it during working hours. (especially to a class full of students)

They can do it on the streets if they want.... to get arrested.

This kind of thing should be done in their own private time with people that WANT to hear.

Religion and politics are 'officially' taboo subjects for teachers. So it is legally wrong and imo morally wrong too. You would be quite within your rights to report the teacher concerned.

N.B. In my lessons I will talk about government i.e. Who is president of China / USA etc, or what is your opinion on pollution / transport / in China as these are common IELTS questions, but I am always very careful to never ask for a judgement or  to give one.

Professional teachers filling their student's heads with stories about invisible men who live in the sky and send anyone who doesn't believe in them to suffer an eternity of burning torment? Yeh, I guess i'd have to agree with everyone else, that's not really cool.

snowballeffect:

LOL, my thoughts exactly, it's a bit like this website really if you don't go along with what the disciples are saying (I'm yet to figure out who the messiah is, any ideas?). However, I think the following verse from the bible did warn about this:

1 Corinthians 15:33

Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

I've been trying to find out for years but every time I ask, one of the 'usual suspects' has basically told me to f**k off and mind my own business.   I'm told by the admin person that the echinacities messiah is some canadian chappy who lives in Beijing, now I wonder what his mission is?  dan dan dan!!!!

dont spread your bullshit stories to people who have the sense to not believe in make believe fantasies.

snowballeffect:

Thanks Mont, sorry to have to ask this , but just to be clear, do you mean the 'preacher teacher's' bullshit stories and his/her sensible students, or my bullshit story and the sensible echinacities members?

The most significant issue is having these discussions when in the role of an English teacher and in the workplace.

As for private time discussions this is no more 'off-topic' than anything else. For example one might have private personal discussion about how much you enjoy Richard Dawkin's books or that you think religion is stupid etc.

No more or less a topic than anything else.

Now, this seems to indicate the teacher was constantly bringing up the subject to where it was annoying or bothersome.

Well, this is about manners and simply being socially aware. I know this feeling as my driving teacher would not shut up about his new age religion being the truth and how he could summon spirits or cast spells or become a 'being of light' etc.

Another teacher I recall would NOT stop going on about the teachers union. Always bringing it up, giving a big opinion on teachers unions rights. You couldn't have a normal conversation.

That's simply bad manners. Regardless of the subject.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
