Q: Foreigners married/dating Chinese: how often do you speak each others' language?

Maybe the better question is, "Which language dominates your relationship?"

Does it go towards whoever speaks the others' language better, or does it automatically shift to Chinese because you're in China?

My wife is fluent in English because she has lived in the West for 7 years. My Chinese is novice at best.......so definitely English no matter where we are.

My gf speaks a low level of English (maybe 4th grade) but my Mandarin is far worse so we speak English.

But when message each other she gets lazy and only texts in Chinese because she knows I can translate it...and often I text back at her in Mandarin.

When are are having conversations if there is a word she does not understand I translate it on my phone for her so she understands the meaning and context...and vice versa.

Sounds like a nightmare, do you not find it frustrating? Its bad enough for me having to explain Western culture, arts and entertainment etc.

Neesquik, it is obvious English isn't your first language, are you sure you aren't Chinese? No, I was meaning more American, British, and Western European culture etc.. I wouldn't really include Czech in that though I'm sure it has a lot of good things there. In fact my brothers partner is from there, she seems a reasonable person, though I get the distinct impression that you are slightly unhinged.

Your commemt about how you cant communicate properly with your gf but she makes up for it in bed......in Porkys there's a very famous scene near the start with a girl they call Lassie. I havent seen it for years either but that bit always sticks in my head.......

Interesting Topic.

I think how much you speak each other's language may show how deeply you love your spouse.

So for those guys who are not fluent in Mandarin Chinese. I recommend you to take one-on-one online live Chinese lessons to show love to your spouse.

I think you're wrong Jennifer, I think it shows that you know another language.

We speak English mostly cause Husband's mandarin is not good.

Probably 10%  of the time we speak basic mandarin.

I wish I could speak more Mandarin with him ,Unfortunately ,it seems pretty hard.
