Q: Free VPN Prize.

Just a couple FYI's on the VPN prize on this site.  My old VPN's contract ran out and I decided to give FBVPN a try since it was free.

1) The very first email I got from them welcoming me stated "We DON\\\'t allow P2P such as torrent"
Already a bad point since I use torrent to keep up with my favorite shows from home.

2) It appears that you need a VPN to even see their site.
This makes it very difficult to actually setup a VPN if you can't access the instructions on how to set it up.

I guess you get what you pay for.  I have already renewed my contract with my old VPN service because I know that it at least works.

Interesting.  Thanks for the heads up.
I had this problem before even when trying to buy a good VPN while I was still in China.
I bought and installed my current VPN at home before coming back and even though I also qualify for the free one now, I refuse to take a chance.

Yes, the first link they send you is blocked. However, I simply emailed them about it and within 12 hours or so, they emailed me back with a link that does work. It's the one the person above posted, although I don't think it's a good idea to post it here, but whatever. I don't know how to compare it to other VPNs because I've never used one before. Sometimes it drops and I have to retry a few times, but that may be because my internet isn't the greatest. It doesn't really slow down my internet speed, and besides the occassional dropping it works just fine for me. Then again, I don't use torrents very often.

I used another.  Mine is smart.  If I forget to turn it on I know right away because my search turns up Chinese. Hopefully I can get back to not using a computer much, like before I started searching for China stuff or emailing women in China .Apartment hunting is over, need a scooter and then my screen can just play DVDs

Xpat.John:

haha. Searching for "China stuff" is how it starts. You will never run out of things to 'look up', or research. Before long you will start moving onto the harder stuff like funny cat videos. Then, the long slippery slope gets steeper and you start blogging (just to keep your family and friends back home updated on what you are doing here).

Then you will start vlogging (or even know what it is). Then you will start to have multiple blogs/vlogs. From there it is only a few short steps before you think about learning programming.

After that, your transformation into a computer geek is complete. And you will never be able to stop using your computer ever again. BWAHAHAHAAHA!!!!111!!!

Why, oh why, do people post links and talk about a) what's illegal in this country, and b) make sure that the Chinese government know EXACTLY which things people use to circumvent the GFW, so they can then BLOCK those ways????

Jnusb416:

Because they are stupid. I went to all the trouble of saying contact me by email, but before I'd even posted it, someone posted the link. They weren't thinking about the possibility of it being unaccessible in the future. Also there is no facepalm emoticon.
