I see it on the menu quite a lot but am not sure if it's considered 'normal' like chicken, or whether it is considered something special.
to my group of Chinese friends, frog meat is consider a delicacy, not regular food like fish, chicken or pork. In fact, a cpuple of them insisted that frog meat to them was an aphrodisiac, like they also consider snake meat one too.
yea, it is.. yesterday i saw one man selling dried frogs on the streets... very often i see it on the menu of high chinese cuisine..
From what I've been told, at least in this area of China, there are two main types of frogs that they eat. One is pretty common while the other is a local delicacy.
Yes and other than frog meat scorpion meat is also a favored delicacy. You can see many of the frog meats and scorpion meat on the side street. Never tried any of them and don't have any intentions to try them, but yes I believe they are both considered as a rare delicacy.
DaBen:
A good ol' southern boy and you've never tried some frog legs?
deefoe:
nonsense...its required to have eaten or well versed in cooking all meats in the south. you are not southern if you can't. SHAME, SHAME, FO SHAME
MrTibbles:
Scorpions taste pretty foul. I wouldn't recommend them. There are much tastier insects out there, like cicadas!
I was invited to what was referred to as a rather "Ritzy" restaurant here in Daqing for Christmas and frog was on the menu at a premium I might add. I was actually tricked into eating it as I was told to taste the chicken. It was prepared to resemble small, deep fried, chicken nuggets...yes and I fell for it. The taste was not memorable at all however.
Little fried frog legs.... yummy yummy in my tummy!
I can't wait to get some in China. How is frog prepared there?
DaBen:
For where you're going I'm willing to bet the first frog you eat will either be hotpot or dry pot style. Spicy and tastey, but the frogs won't be that big so there'll be alot of bones to spit out. But there shouldn't be an heads or something weird like that.
I wouldn't say it's a delicacy here. It seems to me to be everyday normal food stuff. In just about every wet market I've ever been to, there are frogs there. Hell, even Carrefour sells them and they are not that expensive. Salmon and beef are more pricey than those frogs.
You will see them on a lot of menus listed as "Yellow Croaker", even at cheaper places.
Of course there are fancier places that charge more for the preparation methods and quality and I don't think people use frog meat like pork (ie, put it in just about every dish), but I would not say that frogs are like foie gras or black truffles here.
They're pretty common but I think people just don't eat it everyday.
