Q: Funniest fads you have seen here?

I think some fads really get twisted up by the time they become translated into Chinese pop culture.  For example, any shirts with a collar here are always popped up by the guys wearing them.  No idea why they all pop their collars up, it makes them look like serious schmucks. They look at themselves in the mirror every chance they get, seriously can't they see that the collar being popped up looks douchey?

Another one which I noticed are the capris everywhere.  These aren't jean or khaki pants style capris but they are more like gym short style capris, made out of that netting material.  Which means that they're even more cheaper and more casual than normal awful looking capris.  I'm utterly confused but quite tickled when I see guys wearing those capris here.

What else is there that gets mistranslated here?

Those bloody stupid fashion glasses that have no glass in them! WTF!!!!!!!

Why? If you think glasses look cool then at least pretend they are glasses by having glass in them!

I've been tempted to put my fingers through them a few times but have restrained myself.

You beat me to it. Were empty glasses fashion in the '70s back home? Naturally they will follow glasses fashion, but they want to make clear their eye sight is AOK. Even if it isn't, they'd sooner wear lenses than glass in the glasses.

Fashion varies around the world.

I'd be surprised, if I'd see Chinese in khakis on half bum like 'hood-boys' are wearing them in US.

The latest funny fad that made me laugh : Average Zhou trading stock. And blaming "the foreigners" when (s)he looses, in typical Average Zhou fashion.

expatlife26:

haha oh god this morning the woman I buy my breakfast dumplings from was messing around on a stock trading app this morning.

I think it's cool that people like that want to get into investment...that's a good thing usually. But I think they had completely unrealistic expectations.

People need to know themselves. I'm always late when it comes to music. So I know when a song makes it to me it's not going to be a cool song anymore. They should know the same about economic bubbles. By the time people at the bottom figure out they should be jumping on board...it's going to be too late for them to make any money.

DrMonkey:

Let's be clear, I've no problems with people trading stocks in itself. I even do not doubt that some janitors are far wiser than some CEOs. Stocks can be a nice system, if used rationally.

However, investment in stocks is about being informed and being able to keep emotions in check. One have to do his/her homework, understand a market, a trade (say, if you invest in mining of rare metals, learn about how & where rare metals are mined). Stocks are not some magic get-rich-quick-scheme : it's lending money to companies so that they can invest and improve themselves, and then get a share of the benefits. That means a solid business plan, a competent team of people, and years of work. But here, how many people will do that research work ? How many knows what they are investing into ? How many will a coherent investment plan they follow on ? How many sees it as "magic money that rains from the sky" ? As a form of gambling dressed in respectability ? Information research here is "I heard this and that". Gambling with, quite often, borrowed money. Of course, epic mess follows.

Thats funny as hell.  Weird but i never heard anything about the stock market until about a month ago.  Literally everybody started doing it.  I know a guy and he was bragging about the magic money.  He had over 100k in profits.  Anyway i asked him how he was doing after that crash and he said hes done with stocks.

Chinglish clothing in general can be hilarious, but one of the most amusing examples is with all the people wearing shirts saying, "The same is lame" (is this in other cities, or just a fad in Nanjing?). Love the irony of seeing that same phrase on a shirt ten times in one day.

BF/GF wearing the same shirt.

The ripped jeans thing - especially when taken to extremes (as it's slowly heading).

The ghetto look - on spoilt little rich brats. It's expensive trying to look like shit!

And now for something completely different:

Foreigner fads: backpackers which were replaced by DJs which were replaced by lawyers (JDs) which were replaced by economic refugees.

wSchuyler88:

That blew my mind - all while making me feel violated- the dj thing is still here though i think.  What's your category?

The Iphone fad is pretty funny. They sacrifice a lot to buy one then a new model comes out and they do the same again. Apple says turn around, pull them down, bend over.

Hotwater:

And......they don't even use them to anywhere near their full potential!

Meeting people at new restaurants for example. First one gets there, the rest of us can't find the place. With wechat it's easy, send the location. But how do I do that comes the reply. Then they find they can't....because locations services aren't turned on. "So how do I turn them on?" comes the next question! Another WTF TIC! Dimwits don't deserve decent phones as they are not "smart" enough to use them!
