I use to work for the transportation department for several years....
The paint is for the traffic and for pedestrians...it's a way to show that you must stay within the lines....not sure about the box paint but it could be where they want the person to stand...could be a safety thing.. no why?

An expat working for the transportation department? You just gave yourself away, bub. But don't worry, it's not like we didn't already know you were a wu mao.
A Chinese official saw lines painted on the road in the west. He hadn't a clue why they are there or what they mean but decided China needed to copy them anyway.
