Q: Is Game of Thrones really popular with young Chinese?

I was chatting with the lady working at the front desk at the dentist this weekend and she told me that her favorite show right now is 权力游戏, which I then found out was Game of Thrones. I'm pretty confused why a twentysomething Chinese girl would be into a super violent super sexy fantasy/political intrigue show like GoT. Come to think of it, I guess it shares similar themes with the Warring States and Three Kingdoms periods. Do your Chinese friends watch this show as well?

I tried to get my 25 year old girl friend to watch it with me.  She didn't much care for all the heads rolling.

Anything foreign with a lot of white people is popular amongst Chinese. They can't understand cr@p though, they just think it's nice to look at.

Traveler:

I think you're right. I was amazed China allow that one, or V for Vendetta, on TV. Both are obviously (to westerners) critical of regimes such as the CCP.

I think it would be safe to assume they had no idea what it is about.

My wife watches it with me. There are things about it she likes, like the intrigue in the feudal setting and that the cast is so strong, and things that she doesn't, like the violence, the nudity, and that nothing good is ever going to happen to these characters ever. If given her druthers she'll stick with Korean melodrama, which I think are absolute trash with no redeeming value at all.

I don't think so. I teach some students that you can consider young chinese and they never talk about Game of thrones! I would say no!

I haven't talked to anyone in China about GoT. The Big Bang Theory is the most popular Western show right now. Especially with people getting ready to take the GRE. Many people love Sheldon.

don't you know anything about women? they love men. you know how many women i met loved to watch spartacus . you know how many girls loved to watch 300?

they hide their thoughts, feelings in front of chinese men because they are insecure and would try to shame them . but women love watching sexy men even if it means violence.

TedDBayer:

I thought the 300 was a great story, but the movie was too gay. Those abs were airbrushed on BTW. And why Gerald Butler as a Greek king, he's a prick. I hate that they use Brit or Scots accent when they show Greeks or Vikings.

I really like that they do that with a accents. It's a great way to play on the audiences existing preconception of language to add nuance to an unfamiliar setting. Like the way that HBO's Rome used upper and lower class British accents as short hand for the difference between patrician and plebian classes. Similarly, casting Scottish actors in the Spartan or Doric roles and English actors with upper class accents in the other Athenian or Attic roles way to remind the audience of both the similarities and difference that can be assumed to exist between Spartan and Athenian culture.

Good question. Quite an interesting one too as Game of Thrones is largely about certain clans and families scheming and stabbing each other in the back all for personal gain while the common people suffer... sound familiar? I think fantasy in general is quite big here, and I've spoken to a few Chinese friends who enjoy the show.

I just saw the Red Wedding episode, blew me away. Searched for it on Weibo too and found that Chinese netizens were equally shocked!

It seems to serve as a model for the CCP. Look what Xi Jinping did to Jiang Zemin. Totally upset the status quo.

My wife loves GOT too, although she watches the edited Chinese version of the show.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
