Q: Gas water heater, is it dangerous?

I live in a rather old appartment in Beijing and our water heater system is gas driven . That will say that everytime i take a shower or otherwise needs hot water i need to turn on the gas burner. I recently heard of a couple of appartments blowing up here in beijing. I dont know if that was because of old gas heaters, but i seriously suspects so....

Can anyone enlighten me on this one please?

It is actually potentially harmful.

First, carbon monoxyde. If your appartment is not properly vented, then there is risk. It's an odourless gas and can kill you without even you knowing it.

Then there's the risk of fire. Careful of flammable fire vapors.

Also, check if the bottom of the gas heater is sealed. Old ones arent, causing risks of explosions.

If you are very careful, you should be able to reduce the risks, but there is no such thng as a riskless gas water heater...
