Q: getting a Chinese Driver's License without one back in your home country?

Does anyone know the procedure for getting a Chinese Driver's License without having one applied for back in your home country?

I've been pondering this question for quite awhile, I've been here for 4-5 years now and sometimes think I want to trade in my motocycle for a (warmer) car

Just do the same thing as you would do in your home country to get a drive license:  get enrolled in a local driving trainng school and pass both written and road test if you do not want to kill some one on the road with a fake driving license you buy on the street or pay some agent to get you a driving license without doing road test.

thanks for the advice, is this from first-hand experience? I'll look into it tomorrow

If you have a valid drivers license from your home country, all you take is a written exam, 100 questions, must have at least 90 correct answers.  Of course, health exam, photos, pay money, etc.

If you do not have one from your home country, then you must take the written and the practical exam, and understand Chinese so you can follow instructions of the examiner.  Maybe a translator will be allowed to accompany you on the practical too, they are allowed if the written exam is not in English.

Your best bet is to pay about 3,000 Rmb for a school to teach you the details of passing the exam, even if you know how to drive already.
