Q: Getting help from police in China.

I have just recently realized that in case something really bad happens to me I am almost totally helpless and don't even know how to act. Is anyone aware how to actually get help from police in China, or maybe it rather makes more sense to contact my embassy?

Depending on the problem and location it could be either or both.
I have no problem walking into a cop shop to ask for help if i need it.
most cops are willing to help if they can and understand the problem.
like a lot of things in China finding someone who has the knowledge and experience to deal with some things is hard

I'd say ask SAFEA for help instead cops.

I mean, if there's urgent thing, you must call cops, but if you can wait a day or two, try with SAFEA and ask them for an advice.

SAFEA's web link here is Provincial headquarters, and you'll most likely get an English speaking agent.

Stiggs:

Hey even if it is urgent, depending on where you are you might be better emailing safea first, then call the cops. See who arrives first.

Not email, 'DIAL'! angel

At least, they'll tell you where and what, if nothing else.

I was arrested here and cops took Chinese English teacher out of the School with me. I was like: 'why you?'.

Cops don't speak English, but I think, they must have no., where somebody's English fluent, so most likely OP could explain the problem.

I like to write 'SAFEA' here, 'cause 'expat-wifey' get pimples .

More 'SAFEA' more pimples.
