Q: Getting romantically involved with a co-worker?

In most companies and schools in China, do they warn you about not doing this?

Actually, if your boss discovers the relationship, it can decide to terminate your contract or both of your contract, as this kind of behavior is often considered not appropriate in a company.

Naturally, if you're the boss of the company, the rule doesn't apply Smile

Xpat.John:

Speaking as a boss, having a relationship with someone that works for you is perhaps the most stupid thing you can do. It damages the reputation of your employee, who all the other employees with think is sleeping with you for personal gains. It also damages your reputation because you are now seen as someone who uses your influence to get what you want so no employee of the opposite sex will feel safe. And then, if things go bad, you may have the very sticky problem of what to do about it. If you fire them, they can sue for not having just cause. Or perhaps they are a key employee that would be hard to replace. The problems just go on and on and on. The simplest answer is just to not do it.

@Xpat.John. You're indeed right if you're looking from a Western point of view. However, it's also possible that you've never worked as an employee with a Chinese boss. It's very common for Asian bosses to date one of their employee....especially when they are from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, etc. How many times, I heard my wife telling the stories of this or that boss, or what news she gets from other colleagues. Yes, other employees will see you with a bad eye, they will talk about it all the time, but Chinese employees will just gossip about it and still do their work, keeping their anger for themselves. It happens that I worked with a multinational where two employees had a relationship, who came to be known by the management. Well, it was either they stop their relationship, they keep their relationship distant during business hours or they get fired. Again, I presume you're foreigner to speak like that. The reality is also like that in China. As a foreign boss or a foreign company, yes, it will be very hard for you to fire such employees, in a Chinese company or with a Chinese management, things are different. The law protects the employee for sure, but until a certain extent. I fully agree that it's a stupid things to do and I, personally, wouldn't do...but China is China....

On the other hand, how do you think most married couples end up together?

My boss doesn’t care about that.
But I doubt it's a good idea. To see each other 24hours a day? That's too much...

Whether it's allowed or not, why are you even considering it? If it doesn't work out, you'll have to see them all the time. That never ends well.

When it doesn't work out, then it becomes the "whoever has the most pull with the company gets to keep his/her job"

My current boyfriend was originally my coworker. Before him, I never dated coworkers but I really liked him when I saw him and the feeling was mutual. Our company doesn't fire people for dating, they just make us work at seperate branches of the company. However, he and I kept it a secret and kept things professional. While at work, we treated eachother as friends/coworkers. No PDA or anything. While away from work, we did whatever we wanted of course! The key is to be mature enough to keep things at bay while at work. Its inappropiate to kiss and carry on in the workplace regardless of the company's rules so simply don't do it. If you are both arguing, keep that argument in your home. While at work, be neutral. While in public you shouldnt argue with your spouse anyway regardless of whether you work together or not, its rude, disrespectful and downright ridiculous. I see it very often here in China and cant understand why people do it but anyways I digress....sorry...what i'm saying to you is that its fine so long as you exercise caution. You need to of course gage whether this person is worth it. You can't date several coworkers, if this doesnt work out then thats it for the work pool. You can't show PDA at work and you have to understand that you will see eachother ALL the time. If you think it over and want to do it, then talk with your person of interest and see if they are.
