I was thinking bringing a couple of gift boxes of smoked salmon and maple syrup/candies with me to China as gifts, are these allowed and would they be acceptable as gifts for a G/F parents.
In China, customs are different that in Western countries. First, superstition dictates you do not bring one gift per person, for good luck gifts should be in even numbersper person, so suggest two each. Then, when you hand the gift to the receiver, bow your head slightly to show respect while holding gift with both hands. And do not expect or request the person receiving the gift to open it inmediately in front of you, it looses "face'.
Second, if the smoked salmon is packet in a seal wrapping, most probably be allowed to pass if luggage opened at Customs. With the candy you will have no problem. Chinese seldom eat pancakes, and if they do, do not use syrup, in general, dislike anything rather sweet.
You could bring the salmon and candies, maybe a bottle of booze or a carton of cigarretes for the father, a skarf or nice gloves for the mama will do the trick.
