I cant seem to find the part on my contract that stipulates a required time period that must be given before you decide to leave your job, Only things such as 'Leave us and you will diiiiiiie! you are doomed we will take money from you and kill your family!'.... well not literally, but it makes you sound like breaking your contract is a huge sin.
I'm guessing I should tell them between a month, or three months before leaving....HELP!

Yeah, I usually ask for that stipulation, if it isn't included in Contract. I did so at my present job, and she wrote new Contract with 3m Resignation notice. Blitch!
1. Find new employer, who must be authorized for foreign hire;
2. Give Resignation notice to the present job. I usually give 30-days, except if they violate Contract so bad, that I do 'immediate termination';
3. If you expect troubles (you'll always have it at termination) dial SAFEA and ask for the help and advice, i.e. play stupid. I offer detailed explanation over the email, after I get replying agent's email address.
When you have that, send copy of Resignation notice to FEB. They will support you, if your employer doesn't have complains on you, i.e. late, drunk, missing classes .....
Tell old employer that you'll need Release letter and FEC Cancel cert. before the last working day.
Chinese law stipulate your employer must give you both docs. in 30-days after your last working day.
Your new employer will need both docs. sooner for new FEC application and successful changing RP records at FEB.
No China exit required.

30 days is the legal notice requirement according to Chinese employment law. Anything else is illegal (I manage a locally based sourcing company now and have to deal with the company lawyer to make sure all contracts are fully within Chinese labor laws).
So give them at least 30-days notice IN WRITING. If they give you any bullshit tell them you're going to phone SAFEA & then follow through on it. Follow icnif77's advice above. You need the cancellation receipt for your FEC & the release letter for your new employer.
