Q: GlaxoSmithKline executives face China bribery probe
I thought this was the normal way foreign companies to do business in China. OK, here is the question. Foreigners are caught between a rock and a hard place when doing business in China: we are told to conform to local practices while at the same time being criticised. how can we expect to function within such a dysfunctional system (and I know 'this is China')
Business in China is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. You are watched like a hawk by every agency (and employee) to make sure you do things right and by the law. And at the same time, in order to be competitive you have to play by Chinese business rules, which include bribes, dinners, KTVs, etc...
And then, when China is pissed at the US, or wants your market sector, they will put you under a microscope, frame you, or just make things up just to achieve their goals.

Once again, it's a case of companies have gone for the money too much in the past but CHina now wants to rule the world in every way they can. Rules such as those of the WTO don't apply in Chinese eyes. What's more, the Chinese have been allowed to get away with it and now it's coming back to bite everyone else in the bum.
Once again, I wish the rest of the world would tell China to just fck off, and we do our business elsewhere. For a number of reasons, such as losses and other things, it may be too late.
I guess the Chinese don't trust foreign business people (of the opium trade fame), so they are watching every step the foreigners make. Foreigners are more likely to get punished for being involved in bribery than Chinese citizens.
I don't like common business practices in China, bribery, KTV girls, etc., either.

So this doesn't happen in other countries then? It's been going on for centuries in China, India, Japan, Britain, Germany, France and the USA to name just a few. Business is business, bribery is rife, greed is greed. Is this question just another cheap jibe at China?

To be honest I don't know who's comment I was commenting on.
I have an agenda - to try to balance what I consider to be anti China bias on this site and take the piss out of the xenophobic racists no matter what their nationality or colour. Not that I think that you are a xenophobic racist of course.
Why is Glaxcowelcome in the US with SmithKine? Because they are allowed to make 35% in the UK and whatever they can get away with in the US. I do not know any country except China and definately the US where their proffits are not regulated by a governing boddy not run by doctors and hospitals. Otherwise you have what we have in the US where I am paying $696 every three months for 90 blood thinning pills made in Germany. So bribery is the name of the game.

frank, take a trip to mexico and establish an account with one of the bigger pharmacies there, they will bill your credit card and send the medicine to a po box for half the price in america. one trip down will save lots of money. many people do this everyday, mexican doctor will write a subscription for 20 dollars, while your there , a dental cleaning is 20 dollars. i never went to medical facilities in america when i lived there, for something expensive and serious, fly to india. gastrol by pass surgery is 5000 dollars in india or 60000 dollars in america. vote with your money. also eat more garlic and get rid of the pills. good luck to ya.

Come to the UK and get your drugs for free! Or try using 75mg of dispersible generic aspirin. Should be very cheap over the counter.
john is 100% . it's like a bouncer asking you to carry a knife in order for him to allow you in to the club. and if you start flirting with a 10 , the bouncer gets jealous and searches you and then throwsyou out for having a knife.

this is about the cost of doing business in china. only inchina, you are required to bribe govt officialls in order to get them to do their pucking jobs. i have talked to many expats who have done business here.
as john said, when the ccp is having a dispute with a country, then they will target a company from that country , whether it is sth made up like price fixing, or sth they were required to do in order to enter ther chinese market. and don't forget each company must have a chinese business partner. the foreign entity will take the hit while the chinese partner will get the business (along with all the ip).
drug companies are bad , yes. but this is not related to that. this is only sth that will happen in china, and it is china's fault.

Drug companies do this all over the world, they will do anything anywhere to increase market share. Doing business in China, they do it the Chinese way, in the USA and the west their bribery tactics adapt.

usa=foreign countries/ western countries , is retarded logic. usa's problems are not the world's problems.
usa govt does not force companies to bribe govt officials.
china does. if you do not give a hong bao with your application, your application does not get processed.
not every country allows drug companies to be corrupt. swiss , norway, canada, just to name a few off the top of my head.

this is echinacities.com it is a forum for expats in china. we live in china we have reasons to be concerned about what is happeing in the country where we live. if you do not like it, you know what to do.
funny how on another post you mentioned you had a health ailment and went backk to the uk to take care of it. if china is the same as the rest of the world or the rest of the world has bigger problems then whhy not deal with the medical problem here. you don't even buy your own bs. not when your life is on the line right!
On the same day that they announced the "investigation" in the drug companies, and the milk companies, China also announced that they expected the European Union would backflip on the tariffs the EU have imposed on Chinese solar panels.
These tariffs were imposed on China for price fixing, and China's "investigation" into the drug companies is for price-fixing. China do not even pretend they are being legitimate any more.
Yet, just another one of those crazy contraditions China has, will the motherland ever stop, well, on the bright spot, Glaxo was already gearing up to move its production to a different country, could this be the reason why China is behaving like this
