Q: Good hospital in Suzhou for gynecology, any suggestion ?

 My wife got a minor but recurrent but particularly annoying health issue that keep coming back. Every time, she goes to a hospital:

* The doctor observes nothing, does not take any samples to analyze (say, urine), and don't ask questions about daily routine to narrow down the possible reasons at play

* She got a prescription *a lot* of pills that knock her down for a few days, usually antibiotics

* The issue comes back a few months later

We have the feeling that doctors are paid to prescribe medications and X-Rays, not trying to understand why somebody is having a health problem. Does anybody have a good experience with hospitals in Suzhou, for women's health issues ?

Are you not in Shenzhen ? Ferry to Macau or Hong Kong for diagnosis. It might be a bit costly (compared to the mainland hospitals) but money well spent.

And Yes, the Chinese docs are paid to prescribe stuff. The hospitals revenue is based on "more is better". I sadly have the experience that the mainland VIP clinics are a lot better at cutting the bullshit and doing actual treatment. In Zhuhai, most hospitals have a VIP department, prices are slightly less than HK/Macau but then you don't get to enjoy a safe meal in a HK/Macau restaurant.

I'm in Xinjiang and I always say that the nearest hospital to me is in HK.

Buy some Urea from a reputable source.  Forget the A/Bs unless absolutely necessary. Chinese doctors wouldn't know if the Burke St tram was up their arse.

As your stated problem seems to be frequently recurring do as Scan suggests.  ie; go see a real doctor.  And enjoy your holiday.

I visit hospitals a lot and the experience is that, do not stick onto the same one doctor. When you doubt, you change it immediately. This sounds not nice, but I found the right doctor that is doing the Job---the real treatment with comfort of wording, analysis of your illness, even being a friend...I had met such good doctors not just one. Such doctors suggest you do not 'eat' too much X-ray, do not intake too many medicine, do regular exercises...I was not that seriously ill than I thought I was.

I myself was in medical line before but had many ailments or illness that kept me seeing doctors. Doctors are human too; each time I observe them when they were giving me advices and medications. Some of them are weak doctors...and I had the experience winning over some of doctors and cured by myself (gynecology issue).  Meant eventually I am the doctor for myself.. We should treat health problem as a friend; she's ill; we need to help her build up the confidence and get back on her feet by herself.

My wife exercise, we take care of what we cook and how we cook it, etc.

Back home, the health system works like that : every town, districts, etc have a doctor, the large majority just go to the closest one. Unless you live in the middle of the mountains, you have a doctor 10 mn from where you live. We call that a family doctor, because you stick to the same doctor *your whole life*. The doctor know you since you are a child, know your parents, your habits, so (s)he is fully informed. Every citizen got a booklet that tells which vaccinations have been taken and when, X-rays, etc, to avoid overdosage and interactions of treatments. They are bound to keep medical information secret, and overall this is very well respected. You rarely go to hospital unless it's an emergency, you go to the family doctor : most of the time, people got minor issues like an infection, not a cancer... Family doctor have a government income, and it's reimbursed (ok, you pay taxes for this too).

This system have a lots of advantages

* No crowded hospitals for people with a bad back or a cold

* The doctor is well-informed

* No over-prescription

* Reduced self-interest

Dr Monkey, there are western doctors at Singa Health Clinics and Parkway Health in SIP. In my experience with both is you pay more to see the doctor, but your medication bill is much less. If you need specific test they can't perform in house the will send you to the hospital. Also the VIP clinic at Kowaloon hospital is ok.

DrMonkey:

I don't care if the doctor is Western, I just need a Competent one ^^ Thanks for the tip, we might give Singa Health Clinics a go next time. We have been at Kowaloon Hopital before, the regular service. It was, hum, typical (over-prescription, particularly uncaring X-ray operator, doctor who doesn't bother with a diagnostic, rather dirty).

I'm deeply sorry, I know how painful it is to experience Chinese health care system. I guess one option you could consider is coming to Shanghai, I know it is not so close but in case you are fed up with it one hour train is not too long.

According to my own experience, gynecology clinics in Shanghai are not really good too. I have been to several and none of them is good enough, some of them scared the hell out of me. The problem is either price or conditions. Rujian clinic for foreigners is nice and clean, equipment is modern and looks quite safe, stuff speak English. But the appointment will cost you something like 500 yuan(excluding tests, check and medicine) so prepare to pay at least 1000 yuan for one time, depends on your situation it will be at LEAST 2 appointments.

Another clinic I have been(sorry I don't remember name, if you decide to come there I can find the address) is gynaecologic clinic with vip department which is not that vip according to prices but it is less crowded and looks a bit safer. The appointment will cost you 300 rmb first time(including check and simple tests), doctors speak English but the treatment method is still chinese. Although I can say it was the best one. the biggest shortcoming of this clinic is that it does not work at weekends. Better don't go to the regular clinic there, it looks like Indian hospital and the doctor does not even put gloves on but that will cost you 15 yuan so it is pretty fair and prepare to get a pile of chinese medicine, I guess I had the same situation your wife does. It was easy to fix but I had been suffering this for 4 months here since Everytime time they gave me one western(real) pill and a lot of chinese medicine and the most healing 多喝水 recommendation, it was simply not proper treatment  so next month the problem appeared again. I was so much sick of  useless expensive  time wasting that I called my gynecologist in my country  and she told me what to do  then I asked a friend to bring me pills and finally it is over.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
