I've just realised that absolutely none of the music I listen to is Chinese, even though I've been here for a while! I should at least try to remedy that. Can anybody recommend any good local music? Most of what I've heard is KTV pop, and that just doesn't appeal...

Most music is either Pop (which is ALWAYS the same thing) or awkward Rap (both of which are horrible).
The only type I've found enjoyable is underground Chinese rock. They have some good bands, such as Brain Failure, Dude, Voodoo Kungfu, etc...
Haha, Voodoo Kungfu - Bruce Lee sounds deranged!
I have tried to explain metal and underground music to my students
but they get....confused If they hear this one they'll have nightmares for life..
Screaming Saviour : Chinese black metal from Shanghai...just found it. pretty amazing
Miserable Faith (痛苦的信仰 tong ku de xin yang) have a few good songs. kind of soft rock
